Proud Kumamoto Castle is considered one of the most important of its kind. Visitors will be awed as they explore its stone curves, array of turrets, and displays of armor, weapons, and maps. Suizenji Jojuen Garden is downright cinematic, a playground of slopes and dips and trees, in a million shades of green. Cherry blossom season is a lovely time to visit.

We spent an afternoon with an English guide from the Kumamoto SGG Club—-Mieko Okada who was our personal guide at the Kumamoto Castle & to the Suizenji Jojuen Gardens. If you go to Kumamoto these two sights should be at the top of your list of things to see & places to go. Hopefully in the next few months more of the reconstruction will allow for an actual tour of the castle, but the grounds, walls, and views were amazing none the less.

Reigando is an immense walk through Japanese history. It's importance cannot be understated, considering that it is not only where Musashi wrote A Book of Five Rings and The Path of Aloneness, and also where he passed away, but it is near the 14th century Buddhist temple Unganzenji. The entire area is steeped in history. It's beautiful. It's rather remote, tucked away in the Kumamoto countryside. It's not a typical tourist destination. However, the effort put into getting here is well worth it. I recommend trying to arrange visiting here and Musashizuka, Musashi's tomb (in Kumamoto City) on the same trip (I did both on the same day).

This shrine is quite a walk from the tram station but it's worth a visit for a nearer view of Kumamoto castle.
