Coventry Cathedral

Celebrated as the UK's favourite 20th century building, Coventry Cathedral is known all over the world as a beautiful and unique venue. Designed by architect Sir Basil Spence following the bombing of the city in 1940 it was opened in 1962, and contains some of the finest examples of 1950's and 60's art and architecture in the country.

We visited this in June 2019 and it was FREE to visit. It was my third visit to this wonderful Cathedral and this time I took my friend along to view it. It has amazing windows. One is floor to ceiling glass and the other one is floor to ceiling engraving. I have never seen anything so wonderful. The remainder of the Cathedral is also just as fantastic. It has access for people with prams, pushchairs and wheelchairs. The volunteers/staff are really helpful and it is really worth talking with them to get lots of details about the Cathedral - opposite is the bombed old Cathedral and this is a must to view also. Coventry did well to build a new Cathedral beside the old bombed Cathedral and seeing them side by side gives one lots to think about. The new one is absolutely fantastic.

St. Mary's Guildhall

St. Mary's Guildhall is one of the finest surviving medieval guildhalls in England, and has been one of Coventry's premier historic venues for more than 600 years. First built in the 1340s for the merchant guild of St. Mary, with its magnificent medieval interiors, and fine artworks the Guildhall offers a window into Coventry's glorious past. Once a prison to Mary, Queen of Scots, and even a playhouse where Shakespeare is thought to have performed, the Guildhall provides a fascinating free experience for all ages, at the historic heart of the city. St. Mary's Guildhall also offers a memorable venue for weddings, meetings, conferences and private functions, whilst in the vaulted undercroft beneath the Great Hall is the atmospheric Godiva's cafe, offering tasty, good value snacks and refreshments.

Always a fabulous place to visit if you like history & beautiful old buildings. With a tapestry older than those at Hampton Court, full of wonderful details so that nearly all the characters can be identified by name, we were enthralled for over an hour by a local historian who brought the place to life, specially the tapestry. I've been several times before but have never learnt so much. My friend is elderly but no problem, she rode up on a 'chair lift' type platform. You do need to call in advance to make sure someone who can work it is gong to be there. There is an undercroft resteraunt on site but unfortunately I can't recommend it!

Beautiful and very historic church, well worth a visit. The traditional faith is alive and well here, so the church can be appreciated not only for its history but also for still doing what it was built to do

These half timbered buildings overlook the ruins of the Medieval Priory and are just 1 minute walk from the Cathedral in the heart of the old city.
