Y Pigwn

Explore the earth turfed ramparts, curved entrances of these Roman marching camps whilst taking in the lofty views of the National Park.To hear first hand experiences of life on campaign and to see reconstructions of Romans camps we recommend you download the free 'Roman walk' App via WiFi from our website before you visit or directly from App store or Google Play. How do I get there Please refer to the website for detailed directions and public transport options. Distance/TerrainThe total length of the route is 4 miles/6.5 km (return). You will start out along a track, which can be very wet at any time of year, and will also venture off road and across and boggy moorland – waterproof footwear with a good grip is recommended. The route is fairly flat with one short climb up to the summit of the Marching camp (the highest point) at 412 m/1352 ft.WeatherEven when it’s dry and warm when you set out, weather conditions can change quickly in the hills and become wet and cold. Be sure to look at the checklist on the App when packing your packs. Mobile signalYou can’t reply on getting mobile phone coverage along the route. Remember to tell someone where you’re going and when you expect to return. Enjoy your adventure!

Tretower Castle & Court

A dedicated follower of fashion For over 900 years Tretower Court and Castle has been altered, adjusted and adapted. Much of this was done to keep up with style, fashion and the tastes of the time. The Picards and the Vaughans who lived here were rich influential Welsh families; the movers and shakers of their time. The displayed opening times are our general pattern. Please check the Cadw website for specific times and days, including closures.

Tretower had been recommended to us as a little gem well worth a visit, and having made the trip, we couldn’t agree more! This place has some great stories to tell. We chose to visit the day that Storm Dennis was closing in so unfortunately it was way too damp underfoot to get across the meadow the short distance to the castle but we really enjoyed our time looking round the house. Thanks to Ian the Custodian and colleague for the lovely warm welcome we received when we arrived at the ticket office and well stocked shop. It was much appreciated on such a soggy day, and their passion for the place was catching - it is absolutely fascinating! Their knowledge brought the place to life for us, as we bombarded them with our questions. There were a lot of original beams and features in the house that were fascinating to see. One thing we thought was particularly good was the way the main dining hall has been painstakingly decked out to resemble how it would have been in its heyday during the wars of the roses. Authentic style furniture, hangings on the walls, all set up ready for a banquet. You could really get an idea of the difference in the table ware, place settings and food that would have been used by the serfs in comparison to the ‘top brass’ and what they would have eaten. We will definitely return for a longer look at this special place, as we want to see the house in non-storm conditions and take a short stroll across to explore the tower. We can definitely recommend.

Red Kite Feeding Station Llanddeusant

Cash only .£5.00 adults £4.00 OAP £3.00 CHILD A purpose built hide for viewing the feeding of the Wild Red Kites . The hide has some wooden benches to sit on and standing room with a shelf to rest a camera on . We feed at 3.00PM SUMMER and then 2.00PM when the clocks fall back the end of OCTOBER. You need to be inside the hides before feeding time. NOISE must be kept to a minimum so that the Red Kites are not scared away. Children must be taken out if making too much noise . Remember these birds are wild and we have no control on how many will turn up or how soon they will dive in for the food . Every day is different and also weather dependant. PLEASE EAT, DRINK ETC ON ROUTE. WELL BEHAVED DOGS WELCOME must be on a lead. REMEMBER YOU MUST BE IN THE HIDE BEFORE FEEDING SO YOU WILL NOT BE TURNED AWAY . THEY ARE COMPLETELY WILD AND WE CANNOT PREDICT HOW SOON THEY WILL COME IN TO FEED . You may need to wait . If you cannot wait then there is no point in coming to see the Red Kites .

This is an amazing experience! It’s so worth the journey. I’ve been to another kite feeding station Wales, which was amazing with fantastic facilities, and although this is a very basic set up it is all you need to get the best possible view of these beautiful birds. The owners are very friendly and the £4 admission is excellent value. If you enjoy wildlife photography this is an incredible place that gives you a wonderful opportunity to get really close to the birds. We went at the end of February, loved it so much we went back again the next day. There was ample parking (at this time of year but could get busy in summer months) with just a short 3 minute walk to the site. I must also mention Alice, the friendliest cat in the world who we fell in love with!

There is a lovy canal walk which start in Crickhowell and crosses the bridge. It takes about an hour and takes you along the canal path past lime works. It was a lovely day and a great way to enjoy some of the scenery. We ended up back in the village and enjoyed a cold cider.

Gurkha Path

Reviewed By carrieann64 - Oxfordshire, United Kingdom

A beautiful walk though some wooded area by the river. Go across the field next to the car park and through the kissing gate to start the walk. The bridges were built by the Gurkhas hence the name. Unfortunately we did not have time to do the entire walk but saw a good varitey of birds. Will definetly go back to do whole walk
