Alor Setar (Jawi: الور ستار), formerly known as Alor Star from 2004–2008, is a city and the state capital of Kedah, Malaysia. It is the second largest town in the state after Sungai Petani based on the population and one of the important cities in the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia along the longest expressway, located 400 km from Kuala Lumpur and 79 km (49 mi) north of George Town, Penang. The city is home to the Central State Administration Centre and is the administrative centre of Kota Setar District.

One of the oldest mosques in Malaysia; parking could be congested during peak prayer times and festive seasons; a chosen place for newlyweds photography; and a very serenity place for Muslims to pray.

This tower is underrated. The outlook of the tower isn't in its glory days. However, the tower still gives you the aerial view of the city (Alor Setar). This is the only tower, that when I visited at almost sunset, there is no one around. I get the whole sunset view to myself. For the locals here the tower may be boring, but for visitors the tower is the place to check out the river, the old buildings and the landscape (including the hills). There is a fee to enter. You can go to the viewing area level or to the restaurant. Around the viewing area level (open air), there are few telescopes if there is no one around you can use it to your own and have a close up view of almost everything. The tower unfortunately has no explanation on the landmarks of the city. There are toilets at the viewing level. Best time to go is in the late evening when it is windy, not hot and you can stay till sunset.

This complex is simply lovely. Not only you get to visit Tun Dr Mahathir’s family home but you get to visit small museum buildings related to the man. It was a lovely experience. And oh, the public toilets were amazing. This complex is very well maintained. Must visit. Free entrance.
