Every neighborhood in San Francisco has its own personality, from the hippie chic of the Upper Haight to the hipster grit of the Mission. The Marina district boasts trendy bistros and postcard-perfect views of the Golden Gate Bridge, while Noe Valley offers quaint and quiet boutiques. Wave hello to the sea lions at Pier 39, and sample local cheese and charcuterie at the Ferry Building. Sit in on a yoga session in Dolores Park or marvel at the Dutch Windmill across from Ocean Beach.

A city landmark transformed into a gourmet food emporium and farmers market.
The Ferry Building has a wide array of attractions: wonderful restaurants like Slanted Door and Boulettes Larder, great food from top of the line local purveyors like Cowgirl Creamery and Acme Bread, shops with all manner of goods, and a fantastic Saturday market with San Francisco’s unique spin, whether high end oils and preserves or hot foods from stands owned by local restaurants. A great venue with a mix of locals and tourists.

With more than 125 stores on three levels, plus seasonal concerts, festivals or art displays for the enervated shopper.
I once worked here and it was a joy to wander through the shops at lunch time, and then maybe pop into a bar for happy hour. And there are a few good restaurants. The design is classic 70s urban renewal, a nice harmonious collection of a hotel and some office buildings that look like books in a library. Good design.

A shopper's paradise, this bustling square near the theater district has everything from upscale department stores and boutiques to discount houses. After a $25-million facelift in 2002, the cosmopolitan hub boasts a huge amphitheater, granite pedestals on which street entertainers perform and a tree and flower-lined environment in which to enjoy an espresso or an elegant meal.
Union Square is a great place to be at Christmas time (and Christmas time start early in America, as early as late October ....). There is a very large decorated Christmas tree, and of course the famous ice skating rink. Also all the upscale business surrounding the square such as Macys do their utmost to join the festive season. A major attraction for tourist and locals alike.

A group of renovated factory buildings filled with shops, restaurants and galleries.
Its Ghirardelli that should say it all. There are some nice shops and the the building itself is absolutely beautiful. For us it was about the ice cream and the waffle cones dipped in Ghirardelli Chocolate great treat on a warm day. It does not hurt they give you chocolate samples upon entry. If you love chocolate this is a must stop between the ice cream and the store with all the chocolate treats you wont go wrong

Small, upscale shopping mall in the Financial District.
I like the food court area and flower shops at the Crocker Galleria in San Francisco. The architecture is also very pretty. It is in the financial area.

Explore Japanese culture in the city's famed neighborhood. Japan Center's authentic architecture, shops, and food-plus the presence of the Peace Pagoda-make it one of Japantown's prized landmarks.
I used to live in Northern California and went on Scool field trips to the museums, aquarium, art and science centers. What baffles me is we never visited Japan Center. I “discovered” it while looking for a Daiso (sort of like Dollar stores). When we got there and realized it is a wonderland for anyone interested or a fan of Japanese items. There are many restaurants and eateries, shopping and interesting things to look at it. We love it and even stayed in a hotel across the street so we could visit frequently during our five day stay. Highly recommend as a top thing to do in San Francisco.

Metreon is a restaurant-centric shopping mall offering a recently renovated, modern and unique experience which includes dining, movies and shopping. The space is located next to the Target at the intersection of 4th and Mission St in Downtown San Francisco, California.
We were in San Francisco for a convention at the Moscone Center. Metreon Center is very close to that area. We went to the food court area of the Metreon. They have a handful of cafes. We also went to the movies. There is a Target at the Metreon as well.
