Home to both the midnight sun (with constant daylight from April to July) and the northern lights, North Norway is a rugged land of steep mountains, deep fjords and scenic coastline, making it a great place for outdoor adventures like dog sledding, snowmobiling and wildlife safaris. It's also the ancient home of the Sami people, 3,000 of whom live (along with 100,000 reindeer) at Kautokeino, Norway's largest municipality at over 3,700 square miles.

As a French, seeing all those goats and cheese roaming free in Lofoten I was curious to find some locally made cheese after trying this famous brown sugary cheese. When arriving at the farm, it already felt very authentic and the cheese... just delicious. We tried the mixed cow and goat milk and pure goat milk. This place is a must go if you are passing by.

Gallery Lofoten has Norway’s largest collection of paintings from Northern Norway dating back to the turn of the last century – a period by many called the golden age of North Norwegian painting. On the gallery’s ground floor you find a collection of paintings by renowned artists like Otto Sinding, Gunnar Berg, Even Ulving, Adelsteen Normann, Einar Berger, Ole Juul, Thorolf Holmboe and others. The gallery’s first floor is divided into two sections – one exhibiting watercolours by Lars Lerin and one exhibiting pictures and ceramic works by Her Majesty Queen Sonja. In the gallery shop you find a selection of art books, postcards, and posters by the exhibition’s artists. In our café you may enjoy a glass of wine and a cheese platter from the local cheese producer Aalan Farm.

Local factory of hand blown glass, shop and small café. Located in Southern Kvaloya
Nearly drove past...so look out for the signs. Easy going cafe with some great artwork for sale. Coffee was rich and fresh. The owner told us he did the best waffles in the world. As it turns out he’s right. He also does Air BnB. I’d love to go back and discuss 1970’s rock with the owner, have a drink and just watch the world go by. Highly recommended if you are on your way past.

This gallery display northern Norway’s largest private collection of art and artefacts. The ethno-graphic collection consists of several thousand items, primarily old tools and domestic utensils spanning Nordland history from the Stone Age right up to our recent past. This is organized into exhibitions on fishing, hunting and trapping, handicrafts, home crafts and agriculture. There is also an exhibition on World War II, with a particular emphasis on the Russian prisoner-of-war camp that was located at Bodogaard. The permanent collection comprises over 150 icons from Russia, Poland and Greece, as wall as a unique Russian gospel from 1791 that used to belong the Czar family. Also part of the collection are several hundred works by artists from the Arctic region. In addition, Gallery Bodogaard displays temporary exhibitions, and offers fine art and crafts for sale. The facilities are also used for concerts and other cultural events. Meals and refreshments on request. Opening times: Sundays 12 noon to 4 pm all year round. Opening times for special exhibitions and events will be announced. Beyond this, visits and guided tours can be arranged on request.
a stunning aspect of this venue is how close you can get to the art and artifacts, the underground museum collection that is wide open to individual wandering... Harald Bodøgaard is generous in making this place open and available for events, as well as opening the art gallery. I have only been here for events, birthdays, confirmation, weddings, special concerts and organizational dinners, but each time has been inspiring. There is a warm, colorful atmosphere. Too hot sometimes in the summer. They could use an air conditioner.

Lille Kabelvåg art galley and museum isn’t quite as little as its name would lead you to believe. Spread over 600 square meters, the exhibition space displaying works by more than 200 artists, the Gallery & Museum is one of Lofoten’s largest private art galleries. The gallery was founded by the artist couple Inger Anne Nyaas and Thor Erdahl in 2006. In the gallery you find their work. Inger Anne Nyaas is a textile artist, and by her own admission, enjoys challenging the traditional understanding of the artistic arena. Thor Erdahl is a painter and graphic artist, and renowned for depicting motifs from nature by using large formats, simple shapes and vibrant colours. He grew up in Kabelvåg, and is held in high regard as one of the region’s most eminent artists. In 2014, the gallery opened the object and art exhibition Kunst i motbakke (Uphill Art), a large installation incorporating elements from archaeology, history, graphic design, photography and arts and crafts.
