Top 10 Shopping in Downtown, Alaska (AK)

July 16, 2021 Nobuko Falco

Set amid the coastal Chugach Mountains, Anchorage defies popular visions of polar ice caps and frozen tundra. It’s also warmer than you think (averaging 65 degrees in summer), making conditions ideal for sight-seeing or taking on uniquely Alaskan opportunities like arctic biking or touring the fjords of Prince William Sound. In the winter, you can ski, dogsled or do both simultaneously by "skijoring," which is cross-country skiing while being towed by a dog. Hey, it's no crazier a winter sport than the biathlon.

The Antique Gallery

Reviewed By dmjames63 - Plano, United States

As a resident of Alaska, I have been to many stores boasting authentic Native and general Alaskan products and art. This store has the best at the best prices. It is crammed full of AK Native art, scrimshaw, carvings as well as gems, jewelry, antique guns just to name a few. It is owned and run by a long time AK resident who loves his work. No big out of state corporation here. It is worth your time just to see as it is like a museum.

Oomingmak, Musk Ox Producers' Co-operative

Reviewed By K2503OWthomass - Fort Wayne, United States

While in Anchorage on our way to board our cruise ship in Seward, we stopped in this shop in downtown Anchorage. It was an amazing story of the Musk Ox producers cooperative that hand knit qiviut handknits. We bought a scarve made out of the remarkable yarn. It was rather expensive, but it was hand made be Alaskan knitters.
