At Orton Farmers' Market over 35 local farmers, growers, producers & artisan craftsmen offer a tremendous variety of high quality and speciality local produce and crafts. What makes Orton special? Orton Farmers' Ltd (which is our trading name) is a member of FARMA and we operate within their guidelines. The market is certified (by annual inspection) with FARMA credentials and run strictly in accordance with the farmers' market principles. Orton Farmers' Market is a third of the Eden Farmers Market Network
We have been using Orton for years, and it never disappoints - not even when it is closed due to Coronavirus. Waking up to this fact late, I placed orders for chicken and lamb on Good Friday and took delivery on Easter Saturday. Delivery AND smiles! Local food, local people, local happiness.... Thank you, team Orton!

Unique as one of only four puppet theatres constructed in England, with puppeteers bridges for marionettes and a pit for working rod puppets from below. The site lines are great for children, with all the rows of seats on a steep rake, allowing children to see over adults. All of our productions are written, designed and produced in our own on site workshops, staged with full lighting and musical scores and appeal to all ages. The theatre has an on site cafe and also an on site free entry art gallery with shop. Tables can be reserved in the cafe for groups visiting the puppet theatre and a children's menu is offered. We were awarded the Readers Choice Culture Award from Cumbria Life Magazine this year for our venue and last year won the "Sustainable Tourism Award" from Cumbria Tourist board for our"Eco" buildings and sound green business ethic. Many of our audience members have returned year after year to see our performances and after show meet the puppet sessions for photographs.
We saw Puss in Boots with our 6 year old. She was enthralled through. Wonderful production, and it's great that the children can ask questions and see the puppets at the end. Would highly recommend.

The gallery is now open. Thuline is a professional artist specialising in animal portraits, mainly farm animals and pet portrait commissions. In her studio-gallery she sells originals, prints and gifts with her animals on (cushions, aprons, coasters….). She runs small workshops, up to 6 people. These can be for individuals, families, businesses, friends... On location, she can work with bigger groups. These can be organised on very short notice. Or you can come and watch her paint. Thuline does demonstrations too. Thuline also exhibits originals and limited edition prints all over the UK and Ireland. There is a permanent showcase of her work in the Jumbleroom, Grasmere. “I observe animals, their shapes, gestures and mannerisms and in developing my ideas, I take them quite often out of their context. I like using bold colours.” Thuline takes online orders too.
This is an update of my earlier review, which I've left in its entirety below. Having done an 'animal' workshop (see below), and having loved it, I decided to do an online (due to Covid) day with Thuline doing a landscape course. Apart from the usual Zoom glitches, it was fantastic. I'm really pleased with the result so far and had a great day. Thuline has even given me some advice as to how to make it even better - I'm just having a breather before I start!

we visited here with some friends who were over from whitby , we enjoyed a look around the galleries ,where there was a very wide range of craftsman made pieces pottery , and wood turning and in particular we all loved the beautiful little stone and slate bird houses . The artwork displayed all over the gallery is lovely ,we loved a particular painting of a Herdwick Ram but the original wasn't the right size ,so the owner kindly arranged with the artist to have a canvas print done of the picture , it arrived a week later and we are very thrilled with it . we also enjoyed coffee and delicious home made cakes in the galleries cafe which was a delightful experience . would highly recommend to people for a visit .

Set in the shadow of the glorious Howgills near Sedbergh and restored from a Victorian woollen mill, Farfield Mill provides an excellent visit for arts and heritage enthusiasts alike. Take your time to discover a programme of top-quality exhibitions; a unique range of fine art and crafts created by resident and visiting artists; fascinating displays telling the history of the Mill; Weaving demonstrations from our farfield friends of hand weaving on Mondays and Wednesdays; rugs or throws produced on the mill’s own looms… plus The Tea Room for delicious food.
Came upon this place while travelling from the Yorkshire Dales to Lake District, just outside Sedbergh. Had no idea what to expect. The Mill was warm - dreadful weather oustide - and the staff were welcoming. Excellent display of arts and crafts as you go in, all different types from ceramics to weaving, all that we saw was local to the North-West. Bright and airy. There were a couple of artists/crafters 'in residence' which added to the atmosphere. The cafe was in a well restored room, had freshly made sandwiches and scones. The only criticism was the lack of clotted cream (seems a common issue in Yorkshire to me? - Sedbergh used to be in Yorks). My wife came away with a couple of felting kits and could have bought more. Will be going back.

This gallery is a delight. Full of lovely things including art work, pottery and books. It was an unexpected find and a source of joy. The owner (?) is a kind and informative man. I wish I had had more time to peruse everything and then have coffee and cake.

One of the foremost galleries in the North West. Internationally known names exhibit alongside those who are showing for the first time, making sure the gallery never stands still
We were spending a few days in the Lake District, one of which was spent touring in and around Penrith. We found out about the gallery and, in the current circumstances, emailed in advance to find out if it was open and what artists would be on show, to which we received a most helpful reply. The Gallery is part of a complex which includes the Larch Cottage Nurseries, with its amazing collection of plants, shrubs and sculptures for sale and a restaurant. During limited periods in the summer, the private gardens are open - something to plan for a future visit. The Gallery had an excellent selection of art and artists on show, all for sale, some remarkably affordable, with a car park just across the road, and is well worth a visit if you are in the area.
