Amhara (Amharic: አማራ) is one of the nine ethnic divisions (kililoch) of Ethiopia, containing the homeland of the Amhara people. Previously known as Region 3, its capital is Bahir Dar. Ethiopia's largest inland body of water, Lake Tana, which is the source of the Blue Nile river, is located within Amhara. The region also contains the Semien Mountains National Park, which includes Ras Dashan, the highest point in Ethiopia. Amhara is bordered by the state of Sudan to the west and northwest, and in other directions by other regions of Ethiopia: Tigray to the north, Afar to the east, Benishangul-Gumuz to the west and southwest, and Oromia to the south.

I bought a beautiful painting from Eyayu when I was in Ethiopia, full of fabulous bright colours, rich Ethiopian motifs and representations of Ethiopian rural life. Eyayu is a truly talented artist. The painting is now hanging on my wall in my home in Ireland and everyone who comes to my house admires it!

Churches in Ethiopia are like cathedrals in Europe, every single one of them tells a different story. The ferry ride and the muddy walk give the experience another dimension. The hawkers alongside the road to the church are not aggressive, with a possible exception.

Our guide took us to the local market, colorful with fruits, vegetables, spices, hardware, textiles, lots of people... one guy took out his phone and made like he was taking our picture and we all had a good laugh. While the market was interesting, perhaps our most lasting vision is of an American woman from the US watching the scene with a look of horror and disgust. No gigantic chicken breasts on a styrofoam tray wrapped in plastic in this market, lady. Just nice, natural stuff being traded by happy people.
