Sometimes in life, you feel complete, in sync, whole, content. This trip makes you feel just that!! My husband and myself were looking for some quite time off during end of the year and I looked up on google for village experience where I got introduced to Grassroutes. The trip was just a call away, we got complete information regarding all nearby options from Mumbai – what activities, plan, no of days, cost, what would suit us, etc. And we choose to go to Dehene – which is about 3.5 hours away from Mumbai. Before the trip the team shared the guide’s name and other requirements. The guide should be contacted for the route – as the network is weak. The roads are nice and our google maps worked till the village. But it is advised to download the maps due to bad network. Once we neared the village, locals could guide us to the location. We had the option to stay in one of the villager’s home or in a tent. We opted for the tent option. It was a proper camping site and also there were clean washrooms provided outside the tents. We were worried whether our 10 year old would get bored as there was no network, but he managed to make friends in the village and in no time they were busy playing. You are allocated a local household who would provide local home cooked food. Our meal would include rice bhakri (bread), dal (lentil), 2 Sabjis (veggies), Rice, pickle, papad. It was a fulfilling, satiating feeling, to have home cooked local meal in a villager’s home. Food was good and we could always advice if we found it spicy etc for the lady of the family to know if any changes needs to be done as per our taste. Generally rick bhakri is served, but I heard another tourist asked for wheat roti and dahi and same was provided for the next meal. We need to let them know in advance as all supplies comes from a different town. We were also allocated a local guide who would plan our itenery and be with us for all the activies. We had Aruna Tai, she was so bubbly and talkative, made us feel at ease. When we would finish our activities, she would tell us to sit / rest inside her house making us confortable. Our mobiles she would charge in her house. There was a place outside her house (like a bench…cemented one) where we would just be sitting / spending our time after activities were done, which is right in the centre of the village. Our activities included : - Day 1 : Walk to the nearby lake. Very serene and beautiful. And the lake had those pedicure fishes which we pay in cities for. - Walk to the sun set point. Little uphill but day 1 we couldn’t see the sun set due to cloudy sky. But we sat there on stones and smelt fresh eucalyptus leaves - Day 2: Morning trek – of about 2 hours – steep and nice treak to the Valmiki Ashram. (Rishi who wrote Ramayan). We carried our breakfast there and to our surprise there were others friends (monkeys) waiting up there for the same. Then we decended down a bit and had breakfast on way down. Overall a nice treak. - Evening we went to nearby Adivasi village. (you could give this a miss) - Followed by walk to the lake and sun set. The sun set was mesmerising! - After dinner – we did star gazing welcoming 2020! It was beautiful sky with stars spread across, making it feel like a twilight all acround. - Day 3: Rice jouney – from removing the husk of the rice by pounding, then making aata – chakki peesna, then making aata (dough) for rice bhakri (bread), roasting it on wood chulha and finally enjoying it with chutney, aachar and sabji!! It was one of the most enjoyable experience. We had a old grandmother taking us through the whole process, very inspiring at that age to be able to do these physically challenging jobs. I would like to conclude by saying that villagers are so helpful and welcoming that their attitude made the whole difference to our stay. From our guide Aruna Tai offering us to stay at her house (as it was very cold in the tent) to giving us lunch at the end of our trip (which was just out of worry that we wouldn’t get anything to eat on way … look at the innocense) to locals giving us their phone for making calls …. The list was endliess .. Im walking away with thoughts in my mind that world is a beautiful place ????
