It was great and full of surprises to experience their "Omakase" course. We enjoyed fish from local market and they soothed all my Japanese food-cravings in many different way. one of their speciality dish is "tai meshi" (steamed red snapper with rice in a beautiful cray hot pot). The master chef created Kani meshi (crab and rice) for us, because they couldn't get hold tai fish due to the Typhoon storm, but it was still amazingly flavorful! (If you want try this menu, order at the beginning. It takes 40min to cook and serve.)

Sushijin

The sushi rice is prepared (flavored) with red rice vinegar and each sushi piece is lightly brushed with a "special" sauce; no dipping in soy sauce required. The result, unique sushi. The restaurant is very popular. There are two lunch-time seatings: 12:00 & 13:30. The noon seating feels a bit as diners have to finish in time for the 13:30 seating. Too much time is wasted watching the sushi chef prepare the rice. This should be done in advance of the seating. The actual serving is done like a production-line, serving each diner, one-after-the-other, from one end of the counter to the other end. There is no conversation with the chef.

Visited this restaurant on the basis of other reviews. Agree absolutlely with others enthusiasm. The chef here has created an incredibly innovative menu that combines ingrediants in unique ways - and each dish was superb. unfortunately there is no English menu so we did what others had done - ordered a set menu for Y10,000 for 2 (about $100 US) plus drinks. We were extremely satisfied and constantly pleasantly surprised with what were served. The chef is a real master and very inventive w/o over doing it. We saw other customers ordering dishes that we would have liked as well but we were full! An English menu would have really helped to permit even more experimentation. Don't miss this place if you like Japanese food.

Shogetsu

I have been going to Shogetsu for over twenty-five years, in all seasons, whenever I visit Toyama. It is located in the Iwase Harbor district, which has been renovated as a tourist attraction. Most recently, I reserved at the last minute (an hour beforehand), and although the restaurant was heavily booked with ceremonies, they offered us a private room for two. For anyone who loves seafood, in particular, Japanese seafood, this is one of the best restaurants for freshness, flavor, and presentation in a region of Japan that is famous for its seafood. There are a variety of private rooms available, some facing a traditional Japanese garden. As mentioned previously, although the restaurant is aimed at ceremonies and celebrations, they welcome the casual visitor, but reserve earlier than I did this time.

We visited as a family trip. Just found by driving around the city center. Finding parking spot was easy in this block. Sushi was at the price range of traditional sushi bar, but this was belt conveyer type restaurant. However, the sushi chefs here are real masters. The don’t cheat using machine. They are real craftsmen. My recommendation was local specials, nodoguro (white meat light touch of fire on the surface), squids, shrimps. As we went in mid July, tempura of baby Ayu (little freshwater trout) was excellent. Masters were very friendly. We spent 10,800 yen per 3 without alcohol.

I had not been a big fan of Kaiten sushi (conveyor-belt sushi bar), until I came to Toyama. There are many good ones here, but several locals recommended this place as No.1, and I tend to agree after my first visit.Sushitama offers great sushi and great value. Plus, here source of fish is not confined to Toyama Bay, but includes Hokkaido, Kanazawa, and Katsuura (Wakayama). Areas of original production are clearly indicated, which is rare for Kaiten sushi. Weekdays, miso soup is free (customers help themselves). The sushi masters are quick and well-trained, again rare for Kaiten sushi.Look at the today’s specials written on the board and order some among them, believing your instinct. You won’t be disappointed.Problem is that this place is so popular, that it will be full, just after lunch time opening at 11:00 am. But, there are a couple of ladies just for sorting out the crowds and calling customers’ names when seats become available, so just sit back and wait for your turn.Another problem for me is that they sometimes put sushi with too much topping like Negitoro (raw tuna mince). It is not authentic and hard to eat, but hey, this is after all, Kaiten sushi and if you don’t like them, just do not pick’em up.Today, we arrived around 11:30 and there was no need to wait.We had;Bonito, Pacific saury (lightly grilled), soy-marinated tuna, sardine, konoshiro gizzard shad (pickled in vinegar), marlin, greasyback prawn, sea urchin, salmon roe.All were very good and price was incredibly low.I have visited several Kaiten sushi bars in Toyama, but so far this one is the best.

Sushiei Sogawa

Reviewed By MerjaRa

The restaurant serves chef's menus, which are prepared in front of the customers and served right on the table with humorously strict guidance of using or not using soy. Our menu consisted of different tuna, yellowtail, squid, baby squid, sea urchin octopus etc. nigiris and gunkan sushi, most of them very good and some a bit adventurous, and all of them really fresh. The restaurant is small and you might have to wait a bit, but it is worth the wait. The greetings (Hai! Arigato!) of the staff to leaving and arriving customers creates a nice, funny athmosphere. Definitely a holistic experience.
