Tapachula de Córdova y Ordóñez, simply known as Tapachula, is a city and municipality located in the far southwest of the state of Chiapas in Mexico, near the Guatemalan border and the Pacific Ocean. It is one of the most important cities of Chiapas economically as the capital of the agriculturally rich Soconusco region as well as port for trade between Mexico and Central America. The area was originally inhabited by the Mames as a region under the control of the Mame state of Xelaju but was first established as a city by the Aztecs in the 13th century. Most of its economic importance has come since the late 19th century with the establishment of coffee plantations. This agricultural production began a history of migration into the area which continues to this day and has left the city with a significant Asian and German cultural presence as well as large Mayan and Nahua indigenous populations.

Great variety of tacos and grilled fish dishes. All of the tacos were delicious, from the camarones (shrimp) to the house special...fish with a kind of salsa that I do not know what it is called. If you prefer, they also have a number of grilled fish platters with rice and salad. Very little is on offer for vegetarians (and no meat either) and the service is slow.

They took forever in bringing us our food, although we were the only table that ordered when we arrived and for quite some time thereafter. When they brought us our dinner, our fish was a horrible color, black!!, and looked like the scraps you feed animals. It was also half the size of portions they have previously served us when we went on other occasions. When we finally paid (I had to flag the waiters down for ignoring us), they owed us $145 in change, but only gave us $45! I had to insist that we get paid and properly reimbursed. The owner refused to apologize and only insulted us. What a disaster!

Was there for business last week. The food was average and the wait staff was less than average. The setting of the restaurant is very nice with a terrrace overlooking the laguna but unless you have some time, don't bother. It took well over an hour for the food to arrive.

I stopped in wanting seafood and heard this was a good place from some locals. It did not disappoint! They brought out about 14 different salsas to start, which was impressive. (For those not familiar to Mexico... Salsa can refer to any sort of sauce, not just the stuff you eat with chips. Some work well with chips, others were better for the tacos later.) I ordered 2 alacarte tacos first, getting the calamari and the flame cooked shrimp (camaron al pastor). The calamari is not the breaded kind, fyi. Both were amazing and flavorful. I then went with a larger plate and found that I did not understand the menu. Most of the plates are designed to essentially build your own tacos. You can get half orders to try more things. Bring a group and you can sample more dishes. I went with the Poseidon, which is shrimp, calamari, onion, pepper, cheese and bacon! I asked for flour tortillas, which were the best I have had in all of Mexico. The food was an amazing creation, one of the better meals I have had in Mexico. Prices were reasonable for what you get and service was ok. Relaxed atmosphere, TVs to watch the game and live music some nights. I came in with high expectations which were exceeded! Highly RecommendedWe really appreciate your comment... and we are really happy to you enjoyed Restacorante El Mitote, thanks for your visit and come back soon
