I and a companion had a nice dinner of cod tongues and pork scrunchions here -- the food was fresh and well cooked and the service was pleasant.

Newfoundland's famous Fish & Chips. Celebrating 60 years in business, and is still run by the 2nd & 3rd generations of Barbours. All fresh products (except for the off fishing season) Ches's prides itself on having the best quality food that can be found.
First time in NL...we had many tell us to go to Chesâs. We went the 1st night and went whole hog...fish ân chips with dressing and gravy..it was delicious - my favourite meal! We were totally welcomed by super waitress also(Went to the original one )

we enjoyed two types of mussels with toutons. service was good. The waiter's recommendation for Jiggs mussels was spot on. We hesitated because we didn't love the Jiggs dinner we'd had somewhere else, but as a sauce on mussels, it was realllly good.

A little diner with lots of character. Friendly service. Nice that you can order a smaller version of the fish and chips as the portions are huge. The fish with a few chips gives you two generous pieces of perfectly battered cod and enough fries to satisfy. Wash it all down with a nice cold Iceberg beer!

Not so good sorry...average at best Right on Water Street, connected to a hotel...it looked good from the outside but was average at best. We had the crab cakes, the brie and bacon sandwich and the avocado burger...everything was dry, i wouldn't go back. Check out St. John's Fish Exchange...just down the street.

Attended with a group. It took over 2 hours for food to arrive which was very very slow. When I asked to speak to the manager it took over 20 minutes for the manager to come to the table. Instead of being apologetic about the service and asking what they could do for us the manager was very defensive. Said "We have had a very challenging night in the kitchen serving over 200 customers". IMO If you don't have the capacity to serve the tables then you need to reduce the number of tables. Two members of our group didn't eat their meal as it was not really edible. Incredibly disappointing experience for a restaurant that had come highly recommended. I won't eat here again. Overall the experience and level of service and attention to the customer was not what I expected or have experience elsewhere in Newfoundland.

Was visiting family who live in the Gould's. Delicious fish coated & cooked perfectly. Warning on the chips- they were delish and we got them with dressing & gravy but one serving is enough for 2 people. We had take out and the counter service was friendly. Would definitely go again. Good prices.

Casual and comfortable dining, fresh seafood and happy hour tapas in the heart of downtown St.John's, Newfoundland.
We arrived near closing time, but they happily accommodated us on a summer night. Nice table near the front window. Seafood all was excellent. Especially friendly service. It is a small and unpretentious place -- if this were my neighborhood (I'm from far away!) this would be a local go-to place.
