August 19, 2019 Hector Krause

Find out what Scottish restaurants to try in Isle of Lewis. A visit to the Isle of Lewis is like stepping into the pages of a Scottish fairy tale. Everywhere you look, medieval structures remind you of the island’s remarkable history. The legendary Callanish Standing Stones poke up from the ground like a strange and massive stone city. The Blackhouse, the Shawbost Norse Mill and Kiln, and the Carloway Broch all offer insight into what life on Lewis used to look like. Cheerful Stornoway boasts a charming, colorful harbor and several lovely restaurants and pubs.

It's rare to be in a new town and fall upon exactly what you hoped would be waiting for you for lunch! The bar served excellent local beer. The restaurant - with a spectacular view of the harbour - was spacious and well-patronised by local people and visitors of all ages. All the staff were young and charming, welcoming and professional. We started with local mussels - probably the best we have ever eaten anywhere including at home! Followed by a large helping of delicious local haggis, black pudding and chips. A cup of really good coffee rounded off a very special meal.

On a wonderful winters day after walking for about 3 miles we happened upon The Edge Cafe.We were the only visitors there that day and Fiona made us feel very welcome.I fancied a cheese toastie and the nearest Fiona could make was cheese on toast, simple, but just what I wanted. My partner enjoyed homemade celery soup with home made bread.A large pot of coffee was served with no end of refills. We chatted with Fiona, Fiona's daughter and Fiona's friend and, before long, nearly two hours had passed. We purchased some locally made goods before heading for the door.Fiona very kindly offered us a lift to our car which was about two miles away, and, as the weather was closing in, we accepted.Thank you Fiona and friends for making our stay in your part of the world that little bit special.

We booked quite late on after a long day walking and site seeing, the setting is in an old school which is really an amazing place to sit and eat, the menu was pretty reasonable as are the prices. Everything homemade the bread was especially delicious. Marianne was great from booking until we left made us feel relaxed, so much so after our meal we sat with a drink reading some of the books on offer in the shelf. Recommend if in the Area!

We rushed off the ferry to have a bite before closing and found the HS-1 on Trip Advisor. My Mrs had a burger and I had the mussels in white wine. Dear God, I could have dived in and swum in that sauce, it was absolutely delicious! This is a nice little place for a bite, but wow, those mussels!!!

Due to bad weather and cancelled ferries the opportunity arose to visit The Boatshed not once, but twice at the end of our Lewis holiday. It's classic styling is very comfortable, and the fact it's casual makes it a winner for us. The locally sourced food was delicious on both nights and the ambiance makes it a pleasure to stay and have relaxed meal. The staff are friendly and helpful, a special thanks to Richard who was especially excellent and was everything a great waiter should be. We look forward to another holiday here and being able to go back.

Harbour Kitchen

What a wonderful surprise. In Stornoway, no less! Of our three dinners in town, we chose Harbour Kitchen for the first two, and would have gone again for the third had it been open. Loved everything about it, really, from the innovative dishes, locally sourced fresh ingredients, execution and presentation from the kitchen, and friendly, attentive service. We were in Scotland for two weeks last year, but never ventured into a place that might be considered "fine dining". Harbour Kitchen changed our minds about that on this recent visit, and for any future ones. Were I to compare it restaurants in Portland, which is known for it's dining scene, I'd rate it as fine dining, but at a much more reasonable price.

This is a serious food destination. Magnificent fresh fish and shellfish, served in a delightful dining room. There is a small bar near the entry door, where we enjoyed pre-dinner drinks. Banquette seating in the dining area wa scomfortable and intimate. The food was excellent; fresh scallops, firm fresh turbot and a wodnerfaul haunch of venison typified the offerings. So good that we did it two nights running, just to savour the range of food available.

We moved to the island last year after several holidays here. We really don't want Sunday opening to become widespread on the island but there is room for a bit of relaxation of the Sunday shutdown. Well done Uig Sands for providing a welcome oasis! Our first visit today - set in stunning scenery, this attractive modern building has a welcoming interior and a relaxed ambience. The chairs were comfortable, the table a good height and the cutlery wasn't stuff to go gardening with. The printed menu is sparse - most of the good stuff is on the specials board as you would expect from a restaurant specialising in seafood. Langoustines, lobster, scallops and mussels today amongst other stuff.I had the smoked salmon because I'd heard how good it was and wanted to try it. My husband was going to have the burger but treated himself to lobster instead. Both dishes were very much enjoyed and we moved on to dessert. I had the blueberry semi-freddo (yummy) and OH the caramelised pineapple which he enjoyed. With drinks, 2 beers for him and 2 wines for me, £65-ish. Great food, good value for money, excellent service and a great view. Back soon. we've been back since I wrote the above and forgot to post it. Our opinions haven't changed.Hi, thank you so much for visiting and also taking the time to leave a review: it’s really appreciated by us all. We have just closed for the winter, opening a little around Christmas and then again from mid-February. Hopefully see you again. With best wishes from us all
