This "onsen" was one of my bucket list long time. There is located in the deep of the mountains, near the prefectural border of Gunma and Niigata. I drove a car from Echigo-Yuzawa in Niigata pref. After passing the border, you will find a junction which is connected with the destination. 10 minutes later, I could see an anciant ryokan, "Choju-kan" in the end of the road. The "Choju-kan" has been established in Meiji-era, more than 100 years ago. The famous Literary giants were staying there for their writeing work. There are 3 onsen in the "Choju-kan". Oldest one is an old fashion, "konyoku", mixed bathing style. These onsen are also served to the "one day guest" but the timing is only limited the mixed style. However for the staying guest is able to use for limited time for 2 hours female only timing in the night time. Another onsen are switching between male and female depends on the timing. Some of room is not equiped the private rest room however all the guest can enjoy and feel the anciant atmosphie of Japan. I strongly recommend this "Choju-kan"!

First of all I must say, the location/onsen itself is amazing. Quite possibly one of the best in Japan, breathtaking views and also tattoo friendly. The food that was served to us on the other hand was a different story. Dinner was presented to us as a kaiseki meal, but instead of having everything coursed out like a normal kaiseki meal, it was all just strewn out on the table. Most of the food was clearly just frozen food thawed out and presented to us. Sashimi clearly smelled fouled, completely cold grilled fish, and duck meat that was chewy and tough like old boots. We decided to leave before the “Gohan” course of the meal which was the only thing coursed to us at the end of the meal. Our server asked us why we were leaving so soon as to which we told her that the meal was basically inedible. She responded with “I’m sorry” instead of trying to elevate the situation and give us something a bit more satisfactory, almost as if this is a commonality for her. With my 20+ years in the hospitality business I would be the first to tell you that you never apologize for anything because it’s clearly admitting that your food/service is sub pay at best. Later in the evening I spoke to some Thai tourists (I lived in Thailand for 2 years) asking them what they though of the food, and without any sort of hesitation told me they thought it was terrible. My wife, who is Japanese also spoke to some Japanese tourists that also said similar things but were a bit more reserved due to the culture nuances of Japanese people in general. The following day we made a complaint to the manager at the front desk about our experience and basically told us the same thing that our server the previous night told us “I’m sorry” and even went as far as telling us that other people have complained in the past and that “he would inform the kitchen of this matter. No comps for anything, no “we’ll make a better experience for you the next time on us” just “sorry” and basically shrugged his shoulders. Despite the amazing location or not, my wife and I spent lots of money and our valuable time to visit this place expecting an incredible experience. Needless to say it’s highly doubtful we would ever come back unless it’s complimentary on the house. Bring your own food, or go to another onsen

On arrival the staff were very welcoming and catered to our every need in a friendly and unobtrusive manner. The hotel setting is in a very quiet location with all rooms over looking the river and hillside and the rooms are spacious and clean, yet nicely and uniquely what you'd expect from a good ryokan. We found the natural state of the grounds and surroundings to be very relaxing together with the hypnotic sound of the river from our room. Evening meal was served in a private room in the restaurant and was delicious. A good selection of local Japanese cuisine. We finished the evening with an onsen bath together by the river, with not another sole in sight. I think we will be returning!

This onsen hotel was great! Some of the riverside baths have views to die for! We were so lucky that it snowed the days we were there which added to the ambiance. The food was also good but not the focal point of our visit. They have wifi available in the lobby but my AU cellphone had no signal there. SoftBank has 3G coverage throughout the property. We will definitely return to this hotel!

Because there is no way to use bus to reach this hotel, they sent a car to pick us up. The driver was very kind when asked us what if we want to stop somewhere on the road to take pictures, because the view was very beautiful. The way is quite far, it cost about 30 minutes by car. When we came to the hotel, I was surprised because the staffs were wating us at the entrance, bowed us, prepared the in-house sandals with a very polite style. The room is a Japan traditional style room, with a balcony to view outside, there are also futon and yukata like other Japan-style hotels. The onsen-bathroom was great! Nice view, good temperature, and wide space. It was one of the best onsen I have experenced at Japan. The last thing, also the best thing about this hotel is the lake right beside the hotel! You go out the door, and the great view of the lake is right before your eyes!

I stayed here midweek, the staff were very friendly and explained everything, the facilities were very good and the room was immaculate, a very peaceful place. The onsen was top notch, we had it to ourselves. Maybe the jazz being played all evening was a bit much and not in keeping with the rest of the experience. The evening meal and breakfast were very authentic Japanese dining, a culinary adventure! A bit pricey but a beautiful place.

Room: We had the room with a private onsen, And it's quite big we didnt even bother going to the public bath. The room is also big and the view was nice. Staffs: They are very hospitable and friendly. Our only "very minor" complain was they didnt (or forgot to) serve us tea upon arriving in our room which is usually normal in other Ryokans. They just gave us a brief explanation. They dont speak english much which is really okay coz they tried their best to serve all their guest. Food: Dinner was good but not excellent. We had Japanese breakfast and it was a hearty meal. Transportation: We arrived at Minakami Station. There are a few buses in minakami but we didnt catch that everytime and the schedule was a bit difficult to follow. The following day we were planning to go back to Tokyo via Jomo-Kogen Station but the bus already left, it's either we had to wait for a long time or take a cab which cost around ¥5000. In the end we decided to take the train in minakami which take around 3-4 hrs to reach Ueno with a few interchange. Wifi: There is one in the lounge but difficult to access. I'll rate this 4.5 / 5

We stayed in the 5th floor room on the slope of the hill with panoramic view of Kawaba. From check-in we took an autonomous golf cart which brought us to the annex building just to find another surprise: 'monorail station'. The monorail, in substitution for elevator, then brought us from 2nd floor to 5th floor, and further up to the observation deck. The room was superbly comfortable, and with the help of 'Google Translate' we could operate the in-room onsen without much difficulty. Dinner keiseki course were good but not as good portion and tasty as other ryokans of the same class . We found that breakfast was a little disappointment too. Anyway, it was just a matter of taste.
