Just two hours north of London by rail, the city of York holds 1900 years' worth of history in its ancient walls. The Romans built the city in 71 AD, and the Vikings captured it in 866 AD. Stop by the Yorkshire Museum and Gardens for a look at what the Roman and Vikings left behind (they must have packed light when they left). From there, move on to the York Castle Museum for a not-so-quick overview of the most recent 400 years.

Moments from York racecourse and the River Ouse youll find local gem, Meltons. Picked up by all the major food guides, and the only restaurant in York listed in Egon Ronay's Top 200 Restaurant's in Britain, Meltons menu is Meltons menu is an immaculate collection of local and international dishes using fresh regional produce. Mix that with Meltons friendly, warm service and its easy to see why this charming restaurant has remained a local favourite over the years. Sample the delights of local duck with five spice and soya, steamed rice and pak choi, or flavorsome mussel risotto with anise air.
Visited here for family dinner on Friday. Has an unpretentious frontage, but inside is very well presented with a warm feeling to it. The staff were superb, unobtrusive and certainly knew how to look after people. We couldn’t speak highly enough of the food which is of an exceptional quality. In addition to the 3 courses, they brought very appetising hors d’oeuvre, which was a pleasant surprise. This quality of food and service does not come cheap but, if possible, is an experience not to be missed if visiting York.

Delrio's Restaurant offers home-cooked Italian food with a strong Sardinian influence in a lively environment. Enjoy candle-lit dining in this atmospheric cellar restaurant located adjacent to the historic Micklegate Bar and just a few minutes walk from York railway station.
Although a lot of good reviews we found Delrio’s to deliver average Italian food. One should say however that their pizzas were better than average, but both the ravioli and the chicken & prawns (dry and hard) was below average. The whole restaurant had the “factory feel” even though the interior was supposed to be rustic Italian. Sometimes better to find restaurant that focuses on the food, not the interior......

Many restaurants claim to be Italian, but few are. Here is the real deal. No pizzas, just fabulous Italian cuisine as it should be. Prepared with passion and attention to flavour, each dish is generously served to please the most discerning palate.
TAGLIATELLE PAVAROTTI, (for those who wish not to have meat), and TAGLIATELLE DETTORI, (with meat), are two of my personal favourites. The staff are utterly superb and most accommodating. Exuding a warm engaging manner, Mara has served us on a number of occasions and is most attentive.
If you are visiting Yorkshire, treat yourself to a most delightful dining experience. The restaurant is small and cosy, so be sure to book well in advance. You will not regret dining in Little Italy.

The food was excellent, hot and on hot plates, Well served but staff should take orders before clearing other tables, perhaps. Pleasant surroundings and very clean, as one would expect.

SADLY LACKING IN THIS ONE IMPORTANT ASPECT - WOULD HAVE BEEN 5 OTHREWISE

You simply cannot visit York and not go here. We went for an evening meal and we were not disappointed.
The attention to detail, yet very relaxed atmosphere, just helped a fantastic evening along so well.
The food was SO nice, that my partner had a dig at me for using the word ‘delicious’ too often!!
The lamb was one of the best that I’ve ever tasted, superb.
Too full to sample any of the fantastic looking cakes on offer, we said we would leave them until a later date.
The atmosphere is spot on, the whole Barbakan experience was excellent.
Thanks to the pleasant and courteous staff, we had a great night. Cheers

Our welcoming licensed café and deli has a distinctly European feel. We fuse French and Italian cuisine seamlessly with the best that Yorkshire has to offer.
We visited twice during our weekend in York. The cafe is small but we only waited a few minutes for a table.
The staff were all very friendly and helpful and both the cakes and the sandwiches were delicious. Great selection of gluten free cakes and the gluten free bread was fantastic.
Convenient to the Minster and highly recommended.

My partner and I enjoy breakfast here every year for his birthday and are never disappointed. This year for his 30th I arranged for a few friends to join us as a surprise. There was 17 of us in total (quite a lot for the small kitchen!) The quality of the food did not falter, it remained top notch! I always have eggs royal and it’s the best, the poached eggs are perfect every time. Everyone enjoyed their meals, hats off to the chef :-) We will definitely be back (and I expect all of our friends will return too!) Many thanks.

I am the biggest pancake foodie ever and honestly these are the best pancakes I have had to date! Fantastic value for money as the pancakes were huge and looked and tasted delicious! The staff were friendly and the general atmosphere was lovely! Definitely one of my favourite cafes I have ever been to.

"Creating seasonal tasting menus for a limited number of guests utilising the fabulous produce of the estate and surrounding area, we strive to deliver a special experience for each and every diner whatever the occasion!" - Adam Jackson
We like eating out and enjoying good food but this was first time we have booked a taster menu with paired wines. The knowledgeable and friendly young staff explained in detail the food and wine at each stage. Every course was beautifully prepared and served and tasted delicious. Thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience.
