Gene's has been around for a long time and has always managed to offer good food and service and a good value. There is that consistency that is important to a long standing establishment. Some restaurants become complacent and relax their standards but Gene offers the same quality product today that he offered 20 years ago.

some say it is the best bbq hash in the world. others say it even louder. truth be told it is, and not by just a little either. more like a long shot. its rich, thick meat fortified tangy tasty and just all round satisfying and i still do not want to know what all is in there. they also do a right fair job on smoked bbq here with a pit smoked slowly forming a nice bark with a thick smoke ring. they have a meat n three on the menu too but i haven't sampled any of it though it looked rightly like a baptist homecoming going by. tater salad is served colder than a well diggers keister. pickles are likewise as cold. cornbread melts butter on first swipe and beans are enhanced with some bbq smokehouse elixir. if there is a better bbq joint here about i haven't found it yet. we cannot wait to return!

Had lunch at the historic Dairy o. One hamburger, one cheeseburger. Both with fries. Barely got sit down and burgers were there. Great burgers, thick and juicey. Going tomorrow after church for highly recommend ice cream.

There are two other Mexican restaurants nearby that are good. But I would have to say this is a little better than the others. It's a quieter atmosphere and the food is better. It's not authentic Mexican which is a downer, but it is good food. The service is good and friendly. The prices are about average, maybe a little more. But overall it is a good place to eat and I would recommend it to anybody in the area wanting some Mexican food.

When we are visiting our family in Union, SC this is a must go place for us.
The menu offers a variety of dishes at a very reasonable price.
Chips and salsa/dipping sauce comes with every order and we are often almost full when the meal arrives.
The orders are brought out very quick and always seem to be freshly prepared.
A friendly wait-staff adds to the delicious food.
As an added bonus, if the table spends a certain amount on the meal, the table is treated to a free dessert!!

When they start selling at 11pm and people are already lined up, you know you have found the best bbq around!! Whenever they cook, there is always a high demand for it because it is sooooo good!! It's not a sit down restaurant. They only cook every so often. So check with them to see when they'll be cooking, and be prepared to be blown away by the wonderful taste!! I highly recommend eating here!!

Admittedly, Union SC isn't exactly on the road to anywhere apart from the Sumter national forest. However, it IS a wonderful pass-by if you're enjoying a beautiful motorcycle ride (hint!). If a yen to get off the interstate hits you, stop by, and then stop by Dawkins. While really not much to look at out- or inside, the service is friendly, and the food is a fixed-price buffet of authentic Southern comfort foods--greens, okra, squash, meatloaf, fried chicken and catfish, etc. all with good preparation and flavor. Our weekday lunch was $8 apiece, weekend $10. Filling, flavorful, and authentic. No adult beverages offered.

The food selection was good. Everything I tried was very tasty. The lemon pie for dessert was the best ever! The only negative comment I have is that the oyster stew should/could have been served by the bowl. I imagine that everyone fishes the oysters out of the stew on a regular basis; leaving behind just the broth. If the servers asked when taking orders, if the patron would like oyster stew with the buffet, he/she could bring out individual servings, ensuring everyone gets an oyster or two! Thank you for a wonderful taste of the South!

I have been to Shadys a few times in the past five years but have never written a review. I was there two times last week, so I thought I would share my observations.
Shady's is located in a strip mall on Duncan Bypass and at first glance sort of blends into the mall without much fanfare. I like the fact that they are down the mall from a Bailbondsman and an all you can eat Chinese Buffet.
During my last visit, I decided to try the double cheeseburger. It arrived at my table still very hot, right off the griddle and was at least 4" tall. The juicy burger was accompanied by hand cut fries, which are so much better than frozen. My waitress said the burger would definitley fill me up as her husband, who was about my size, could barely finish it. The big bartender at the bar looked liked he had a nealthy appetite, so I figured I would be full on completion. She was right, after two Yuenglings and the fries, I was stuffed. If you like burgers, check out Shady's.
Then the next day I was telling some folks about the burgers and they convinced me to return to Shady's for lunch. Instead of ordering an awesome hamburger, I got the Rooster sandwich as a compromise to prevent my cholesterol from rising 1000 points. The Chicken sandwich was also very good with mushrooms and cheese adding to the delicious grilled chicken breast. Of course, I had to get the hand cut french fries and they were good again. Two people in my party got the burgers, and of course, loved them. The fourth ordered a salad and if you are into salads it looked very tasty.
Shady's is not a fancy place but you feel comfortable there dressed up or dressed down. I saw a couple of families having dinner nearby, so you can take the kids. The people who run it are nice and put out a quality product. If you get in trouble there is a bailbondsman nearby. Give them a try if you are in Union, you won't regret it.

We stayed in Union for just one night and were amazed by how few options there seemed to be for food. We settled on La Fogata as our hosts told us the nearest fine dining was a half-hour away. It was an excellent choice.
The waiter was very friendly and engaging. The food is dirt cheap, but the quality is high. It's authentic Mexican like you would usually expect to find in a larger city. They were fast and efficient, and portions are perfect.
This town very much has the "one-horse" feel, and if I'm ever back, I'll be hitching my horse again to La Fogata.
