This is a fine restaurant to experience real mineiro cuisine in an intimate setting with Seating both inside and in an enclosed off-street courtyard at tables large and small to suit the size of your party. Open for lunch at around 11:30 am. A very good choice of dishes from which you can help yourself and pay by weight. This could be one of the better restaurants in Sao Joao del Rei. An abbreviated wine list has some good inexpensive choices. The place fills up quickly.

The food is good, they have different ingredients and the result is positive. He dessert was very good! I ate a "pudim de leite condensado com raspas de laranja" and my husband an ice cream with caramelised bananas which were delicious! The service was a negative point because we waited too much time to be served.

Sure we all are a bit prejudiced - most Brazilians would not expect a quality Japanese restaurant in this historic city, but São João del Rei is visibily becoming cosmopolitan, especially because it's a university city.
From title of review and my first comments you can imagine this is a positive review - but why not give this place a 5 since it's a well-run eatery serving above-average Japanese food?
It has a team of young waiters who evidently enjoy their work and know their Japanese food, it's a restaurant with tatames if you want to sit more Japanese style and nice tables and decor for all more Western-style eaters, its misoshiro is really tasty, its pork guioza and meat harumaki yummy with nice sauces.
But the green tea became cold really quickly and though quite good, the salmon and shrimp temakis were just not up-to-par with better places. Not to mention that last temaki ordered did take a bit too long to be prepared - when its full, expect some long waiting times. Also, though apparently a nice touch, putting little ebi/shrimp in misoshiro instead of tofu was not really that pleasant of an experience.
All that said, we'd certainly repeat the culinary experience if we ever return to SJDR.
Bon appetit!

After travelling Brazil for a month I have been in various buffet restaurants (where you pay by the weight of your food). The "Wooden Spoon" (English for Colher de Pau) was the best for me. A very nice variety of dishes (others have that as well). The difference, however, is that each and every item I tried was fresh and cooked to perfection! Better than any other such restaurant that I tried.
It is for lunch only (closes at 14:30h).
You will find me there tomorrow at noon :) Highly recommended! Oh, and the service is smiling, helpful and quick...

Fica próximo à estação do trem, dá pra ir a pé tranquilamente.

Eu e minha família pedimos 4 hamburgers (2 Classic Cheeseburger, 1 cream cheeseburger e 1 chedar mushrom Burger ). Pão saboroso, carne macia e bem temperada e molhos maravilhosos.

Travelers to São Jão del Rei have many options to appreciate the tasty food of Minas Gerais. In this restaurant wouldn't be different. You can enjoy the self-service buffet for a fair price, just a few meters from the train station in the historical center. The disadvantage is the tight internal space, which can be a little annoying.

Comida gostosa e atendimento maravilhoso!

I had lunch in other restaurantes in the city before discovering this one. It´s hidden behind the railway station. Very clean, organized, lots of choices for lunch, smiling waiters. It´s large and has enough ventilators. Fair cost. It was open in Christmas Day! So I suggest you go there first of all!
