Cafe Kahawa is located in San Gerardo de Dota, at approximately 2 1/2 hours from San Jose, 09 kilometers off the main road, and on the road side in San Gerardo. The restaurant, opens for breakfast, lunch and afternoon coffee. Dinner might be arranged if reserved in advance. Regular schedule is from 8 am to 5:45 pm. The specialty at Cafe Kahawa is fresh trout, served in many different ways from appetizers, salads, pasta, and sandwiches. Try out our Smoked trout dip, it is really good! THere are also options for those who don't like trout, including chicken, and Costa Rican specialty of bean soup. We now accept credit card payments!
Stopped at Kahawa to see the many birds but were met with such hospitality that we decided to stay for lunch. And what a treat it was! Very fresh (home grown vegetables and herbs) and great flavours. Together with the astonishing garden, the many birds made this a wonderful lunch-stop! Highly recommended!

Fine family cafe with welcoming atmosphere - superb trout dinner. Bird watching from the veranda in back...enjoyed breakfast there too.

Fresh trout, simple but delicious food. Nice people. They even have a fireplace which is a welcomed thing after being in the raw, damp montane cloud forest.

After Reading "Ani from Oregon's" review we feel that we had almost identical experiences. The valley known as San Gerardo de Dota IS a lovely Garden of Eden and although we only spent the nights there we at all of our breakfast and dinner meals at Los Lagos. Paulina was also like our mother and her daughter Gerardina and other family members and employees were exceptionally kind and sweet. Our breakfasts consisted of huge plates of fresh fruit, eggs, rice and beans or pancakes, ham, toast and coffee. A delicious homemade jam from a type of native plum was served on the side. For three evenings of dinners we chose a variety of meals such as trout cooked two different ways, beef, and chicken. Never got a chance to try the pork dish but every meal we had was delicious! We brought our own wine and they promptly placed wine glasses on the table for our enjoyment. Dinners came with wonderful large salads and soups.
To plagiarize from Ani from Oregon again, there usually were not many people there so it WAS very peaceful, and the hummingbirds and tanagers DO frequent the beautiful flowers throughout property and feed just outside the windows. The Wifi was also appreciated, and the very best thing WAS being welcomed by this warm and amazing family!

After travelling north on this beautiful road with amazing views, we stopped into this roadside stop. Located around marker 95 and at 3100m high.. it’s a great place with some home made food and drinks, but the best thing is the humming bird feeders located at the back of the place in front of the huge windows.. you can have some food and a coffee while looking at the humming birds come and go.. it’s a great stop.

In Costa Rica the small restaurants frequented by locals are often called "sodas", and Cafeteria Los Chespiritos on the Pan American Hwy (near Km marker 85) is a veritable institution to those who make the drive over the famous Cerro de la Muerte. It's the only such soda I've found with cafeteria-style serving. The food is delicious, the portions are ample and the place is almost always bustling with satisfied customers (truckers, tour buses, and many travelers). The prices are great: during Feb 2014, you could eat eat a filling "casado" for under $6 (including drink & tax). There are other sodas along that beautiful stretch of highway, but the always busy parking lot at Los Chespiritos tells the tale! For a delicious treat, ask for the Batido Mora con Leche (a blackberry "smoothie).
Across the highways is the small visitor center for Parque Nacional Los Quetzales (no entry fee to walk the trails).

We stayed at Savegre Hotel, so we had many opportunities to eat at their Las Bromelias restaurant. The meals were served buffet style and were made with high quality, fresh ingredients. Breakfast options included things like scrambled eggs, sausage, delicious fresh pineapple and other fruit, gallo pinto, plantains, potato cakes, and a nice selection of fresh juices like blackberry and passion fruit. Lunch and dinner offered hot entree choices like roast pork in fig sauce, fresh trout, and beef with black peppercorn sauce with side items like rice, yucca, sauteed veggies, and salads. We even had Thai style pork one night that was delicious. There was always a nice variety of desserts on the dessert table as well, everything from little pastries to coconut cake and ice cream. All of the food was very good and more sophisticated than what we were expecting. There are also several hummingbird feeders right outside the restaurant that attract a number of species. We got some nice photos there. If you're staying at the hotel, I would recommend getting the meal plan, but if you're just in the area, it's worth stopping into Las Bromelias for a good meal.

My second year to visit Victor and enjoy his food which he prepares with passion. Once again I had a great dining experience. His margarita pizza is one of the best I have ever had. It is such a surprise to have such fine food so far away from the city. hope to see you you next year victor.

We had several delicious meals here. The chef was very creative. Breakfasts choices ranged from pancakes to bagels with smoked salmon, lunches were excellent and dinner meals were gourmet delights. The atmosphere is romantic especially at dinner time. All was perfect.
