lovely little place off the beaten track. This is a must if you are visiting Retford. It serves beautifully home made cream scones and the coffee is excellent quality. Service is always warm and friendly. By far the best place for a coffee stop in...MoreHi Thank you so much for taking time to review, hope to see you very soon! Lynda D

Contemporary canal-side gastropub, in rural Nottinghamshire, serving bar snacks, a full restaurant menu and daily specials.
I make no apologies for writing again about the Gate Inn which is on Smeath Lane, off Tiln Lane and on the way to Clarborough. It is seriously worth taking the Gainsborough Road out of Retford Centre to find this rural restaurant, for that is what it has now become.Of course the ale is there, and the bar is there, but these days, when the weather is cold, it is well worth going to eat here,. It is only 3 minutes out of Retford .
On this occasion it was Valentine's Day, and I took my vegetarian daughter and my wife for lunch.
My daughter enjoyed some excellent home-made soup and my wife had the same dish that I had as a starter. It was King prawns, panfried and dressed with sweet chilli sauce. She never eats much but she finished these.
I was served in a very friendly way a good piece of rump steak, with crispy, but not hard chips and seasonal vegetables. It was cooked exactly as I had asked for it.
The only bad thing about the day is that I left my on a chair! Still, knowing Fernando, the effervescent manager, I feel sure that he will find it and when I go the next, which will not be long, he will have it for me.

Nice ambience and good table layout. Excellent staff. Well priced ca £50 pp with drinks. But the cooking fell just short. We had lamb which was outstanding but the fish (cod) was smothered in "sauce" and probably over cooked; desert was a disappointment the flavours not distinctive enough. Well worth a visit and we would go again but it just missed the mark.

The Ferry Boat is situated directly opposite the lane that used to be home to the ferry, which records show operated certainly from the twelfth century to 1922. Also there is evidence of an Ale House at Trentfield farm since the 18th century and which ironically now owns the pub! You will always receive a warm and friendly welcome at the Ferry Boat Inn. We care about our customers and want you to have the best experience. In the summer there is outside Seating and a lovely conservatory for you to relax in and in the winter we have a roaring fire which gives the pub a lovely, warm atmosphere. The Ferry Boat is pretty much as it was in the 1900's and some improvement & refurbishment work is being carried out during winter 2015/16. We are very proud of our menu at the Ferry Boat, our head Chef takes great pride in the range of food we offer from our secret recipe beer batter, to our homemade artisan pizzas or our Roast with the most on a Sunday. We offer a wide range of international Beers and Cask Ales from the best local Breweries, and carefully selected wines. Food is served at the following times: Tuesday - Thurs 4 pm - 9 pm Fri - Sat 12 pm -11 pm Sun - 12 pm - 9 pm
We have been today for a family get together. The lunch was great value for money and well cooked, the roast beef was excellent. The service was excellent, with a special mention to Nicole. Nothing was too much trouble. Well worth a visit.

Blacksmiths Clayworth is a gastropub/restaurant with 2 AA rosettes. The Blacksmiths accommodation has been awarded a 5 Star AA Gold Award.
Went yesterday for a Valentines evening at the Blacksmiths. It was amazing. Absolutely faultless both service ambience and food. We have visited quite a few times recently and have never been disappointed. It just gets better every time.
Please DON’T CHANGE ANYTHING. Love this place.
We had the 5 course menu. We were greeted on arrival with a glass of prosecco after being shown to our table which was beautifully decorated with an adorable red rose for the lady. This place is so classy and love the attention to detail. The Blacksmiths oozes quality. The food was stunning. Each course was so tasty and served to us by friendly and efficient front of house.
Thank you again for a lovely experience. Will definitely be coming back soon.

We visited on August bank holiday Monday for my birthday. We had a set menu but it had plenty of choice for us. The staff were attentive and helpful throughout our meal. The actual place is very nice and original inside. I had a water soaked steak which was lovely and a new one on me, well worth trying and would have it again!!
We will certainly be back very soon to try more of the menu! Thank you for my birthday meal.

Classy English food in a very oldy worldy setting. With fantastic hosts to welcome you with an 'extension of our living room' type feel...
A nice place to stop off for a drink, very friendly staff and visitors too. Food menu nice and varied but quite pricey. The Sunday lunch lacked something, that home cooked taste and appearance, not enough vegetables.

Lovely fresh food served here, to dine in or take away.
The coffee is always good and the service always comes with a smile and a chat. Mamma Giusi's is a perfect example of how the little guys are better at what they do than the big chains. I hope that us locals continue to support Mamma Giusi's as they add a personalised and cosmopolitan touch to our town.
