Flying Fork Cafe & Bakery

One of the more established restaurants in the North Fork Valley - The Flying Fork has a reputation for using the freshest, most local ingredients available. Owner/Chef Kelly Steinmetz uses the words "Simple Elegance" to describe both the cuisine and the ambience at the Flying Fork Cafe, located at the corner of 3rd and Main St. In Paonia. Dinner is elegant and packed with flavor. Choose from an assortment of pasta, braised Colorado lamb, NY strip steak, fresh fish, homemade Lasagne or fettuccine. Plus daily specials. "Being able to set up this restaurant from scratch is a dream come true," says Kelly. He keeps his eye on the "complete package" - flavorful food, outstanding service and a pleasant ambience, which is enhanced in the summer by outdoor garden seating under the fruit trees. With any meal, enjoy wines, beers, spirits and hard cider from around the North Fork & Colorado. In the bakery, sample a delicious cinnamon roll with bing cherries & walnuts or a hearty muffin with a cup of fresh roasted organic coffee. Pick up a loaf of artisan style bread, a dozen homemade cookies and stuffed focaccia breadsticks to take home. Cooking it up with Passion & a Whole Lotta Goodness since 2003.

The Flying Fork Cafe has been serving fine cuisine and local wines in Paonia for well over a decade. Due to a downturn in the local economy, it no longer serves lunch. Dinner is available -- and worth every mouthful! The garden is ideal once the heat of the day has passed. The Bakery continues to operate and provides delicious pasteries, baked fresh daily, as well as stuffed breadsticks and sandwiches to go. A call in advance will assure you of freshly made sandwiches to order. Most unfortunately, a "for sale" sign sits outside the Bakery door.

The ice cream was made in Colorado and was good. They have a variety of flavor and cones or cups to serve the ice cream in.

The Living Farm Cafe

Organic Farm to Table dining, showcasing our "Local Organic Farmers and Vintners". Gluten free and vegetarian options available. Serving breakfast and dinner in a comfortable relaxed setting, indoors or outsideon the tree-shaded deck. Local produce, meats and handmade crafts in our Farm Market, and five beautiful rooms in our cozy inn. Welcome!

Very hot day and looking for a decent meal, we picked out The Living Farm Cafe based solely on first impressions as we drove past.

It's housed in a converted home with old-style hardwood floors and a down-home feel. We opted for the outdoor seating which was completely shaded by tall elms, creating a cool oasis for our meal. Very nice.

My wife and I split a Bison Burger which was so large and came with so many fries that we still had leftovers. Kind of pricey for a burger, but the organic tag and portion size made it worthwhile.

To my ever-lovin' surprise, my wife was mesmerized by the offering of a goat's milk White Russian and ordered one. It was creamy, mellow, almost like dessert. Sweeet.

Nice find: Good service. Good dining experience.

On a trip home, went to Snow Dogs to check it out, as it was new to the area since my last visit. The dogs were amazing (they also have burgers, gyros, etc.). We went a bit off the lunch hour, so as we were enjoying our dogs and the beautiful weather, the owners came out to chat with us. Turns out they are from Chicago and moved to Colorado. These dogs are fantastic and you have to try them. I would highly recommend stopping here.

We've eaten here many times for breakfast, but this was the first time for dinner. I had the beef brisket and pork duo and guest had the beer batter cod, both were very good. Service could be improved, especially since we were the only diners. If you have had dinner at The Diner, give it a try.

Backcountry Bistro

Backcountry Bistro is a small coffeehouse/bistro serving excellent organic fair trade coffee, breakfast, lunch, pizza and light evening meals. We feature local wines and spirits. A local gathering place and always welcome to those passing through.

Reviewed By TheMayor714 - Boulder, Colorado, United States

We hadn't heard of Backcountry, but luckily came across it when a couple of other restaurants we enjoy were closed on Sunday afternoon. I'm glad we did. First off, the owner and staff were extremely friendly. We had lively conversations with the owner, and the rest of the staff seemed to enjoy working there. Always a good sign! But most of all, the food was delicious. My GF had a grass fed burger that she says was one of the best burgers she had ever had. I was only allowed one bight, but I have to agree. I had the small plate of fish tacos. Also very very good, served with a delightful salsa. But the plate was anything but small. The serving including three large fish tacos. For desert we had a strawberry rhubarb tart served warm with vanilla bean ice cream. Double delicious. I look forward to our next trip to Paonia!

Sol Margueritas

Reviewed By MileHighCityMidori - Mile High City

People around the North Fork rave about Sol Margueritas. I've been here several times over the last two years, most recently in June, 2016. I guess I differ from the locals. This restaurant is the only Mexican in the area and it's pretty darn mediocre. The service is inconsistent and they seem chronically understaffed. The food rivals ease of prep style like Casa Bonita. The signature here is Mexican rice complete with corn and peas-usually dry and overlooked.

Their salsa is about the best thing they have--homemade and just enough spicy to make it interesting.
It's not good enough to warrant a special trip however.
The chili rellenos are really greasy and flavor-less. Burritos are bland. Green chili is commercial and pasty.

I miss authentic Denver/Federal Mexican made by people who care about what they are serving.
Pass by this one, head to Delta (Don Gilberto).

Reviewed By RVJnCO - Paonia, Colorado

Paonia was fortunate for many years to have a Mexican Restaurant, Sol Margaritas, at the corner of Grand and Third. Being from Arizona, I know authentic Mexican food from Tex Mex or from the many impersonators. This place was for real. It's closing was sad. Would Mexican food ever return to Paonia, Colorado?

Fortunately the location stayed closed for less months than the groundhog is in his burrow. A new Mexican Restaurant has opened at the same location, thanks to the efforts of the landlord. Rio Bravo opened its doors in March and I am happy to report that it maintains the same tradition of fine authentic Mexican food as did Sol Margaritas.

So far there have been no changes to the ambiance. I wouldn't have anticipated any, because the previous operators had just completed some cosmetic changes. Seating is ample and there was plenty of room when I went (which was on a Monday night. Yes it is open on Mondays!). A larger group asked to be seated in the side roo, which had plenty of space to accommodate them.

Service was entirely adequate. I was served drinks and chips right away and had time to study the menu. I can tell it is not their final menu, nor even THEIR menu as there were little stickers covering the old prices with new prices. Was I tempted to see what the old price was? Of course! But I was nice and did not ask my son to peel off the labels on his menu. Always nice to have a son with you when you dine, to take care of things way too gauche for a sophisticated older man.

The wait staff was friendly, though it seemed limited. I had plenty of time, so not complaining and staff was busy tending to customers that were leaving. Perhaps another server would have resulted in speedier service. Or perhaps the kitchen staff was limited. Such thing happen when a new restaurant opens, and I am sure that management will work it out.

When the food arrived it was warm, well presented and very tasty. I have eaten there only once so cannot make a recommendation, but based on my "pig in a poke" approach, I think you can be confident that any dish you choose will be done well. Staff was friendly, courteous and smiling from the first glass of water to handling the check. Price was affordable, though son thought it was a bit high. And he wasn't even paying for it!

Caution: they did not yet have their liquor license when I visited, though I have been told that is in process. I am sure it will be forthcoming, however. Maybe just in time to enjoy some margaritas or cerveza at the outside patio on Cinco de Maio.
