I chose Hobarts over a number of other options due to their AGFG 2 hat status. Unfortunately the experience didn't quite stack up to the promise. We had the seven course degustation. The first two dishes could have been great but were let down by the fried elements that felt a little lazy. The chicken dish was the highlight but many of the dishes had a very high sugar content and not well balanced leaving you looking forward to sweets less than you would normally be. You couldn't help feeling that much of the dish had been prepared and not freshly made. The lamb was cool instead of piping hot.
The staff were absolutely delightful but the break between courses was way too long. unfortunately the atmosphere was spoilt by a loud mouth, very rough woman seated in the centre of the restaurant, talking about some real no-go things when eating. Having been initially uncertain about the restaurants location in the leagues club, this confirmed my fears. She seemed to be well known to the staff and chef.
The ideas behind the dishes were inventive but I just felt they lacked something in execution. I don't think you could score this restaurant head of some of the more notable, consistent performers on the AGFG score board that come behind it.

Our aim is to provide simple pleasures - food that is handled with care, wine that fills the senses and service that is attentive and thoughtful.
We visited on a Saturday night for my birthday and chose the 8:15pm sitting. Very welcoming staff, extremely friendly and professional.
The five course set menu was incredible. So many delicious tastes. We loved that the portions weren't too big and we still had room for coffee with dessert. My dessert came with a birthday message written in chocolate with my name. Very personal and it was much appreciated. Excellent wine list too.
An elegant atmosphere that still managed to feel comfortable and casual.
Highly recommended for a special night out in Newcastle.

Nice restaurant, average decor, lovely sea breezes through the traditional sash windows. Two servers on the night we dined, maybe just not enough for the diners present, but definitely wasn't full.
So slow service ensued ... we ordered some olives and whitebait with drinks while we perused the rest of the menu. The "tapas" were slow to come, and so the idea of splitting the order into bits and pieces was lost. The olives never came.
We ordered another two plates with some wine by the glass. The plates came - one a special at $25 for a handful of clams which were delicious with a nice sauce, but for $25 not even a slice of bread to mop up the sauce!
The wines came after we had finished the dishes, were warm (at least 25 degrees) and my wine ($16 a glass) was corked as it had been opened two days prior and left in the heat. Got my money back on this one, but all up was a disappointing experience.

Hidden away in the back streets of Merewether, The Restaurant at The Burwood is a bit of a local secret. With a three schooner rating from the Sydney Morning Herald Pub food guide, the restaurant is proud to be recognised as one of the top pub restaurants in the state. Known for our great steaks, The Restaurant at The Burwood Inn offers modern Australian cuisine and traditional pub favourites. Open for lunch and dinner daily. Bookings recommended.

After Reading the reviews I booked a special dinner date for two. We were seated at the back of the restaurant which gives you a little privacy, unfortunately as the next door restaurant is doing functions on weekend nights we were overwhelmed with the noise, speeches, clapping & cheering that floated over & made us feel like we were in a pub venue for the first hour. Service was excellent & wine & drinks fabulous. Food we felt was underwhelming for a hatted restaurant. Best dishes tried were the house bread, amuse, Marron($20 surcharge-Excellent) beef main, chips & bean sides & sago dessert. Entree of HALF of ONE Chicken WING was really underwhelming, firstly in the fact it was a One Mouthful serve & what was it stuffed with? with a few small pieces of veggie on the side we awarded this the meanest sized entree we have ever eaten. The suckling pig was tender but had a very hard top to get through & my dessert of frozen chocolate was just a strip of mushy chocolate mouse with a few wee toppings. Compared to hatted restaurants in the vineyards we felt that a food bill of $200 for 2 was not warranted. Maybe breakfast or lunch would hit the spot next time.

The Grain Store Craft Beer Cafe, A specialised restaurant that is owned and operated by Kristy and Corey Crooks, has been restored to the beautiful Warehouse venue it once was. Located in Newcastle's new food and cafe hub of the Historic East End, with high ceilings, Art Deco tiling and timber flooring, it is the perfect site for the Craft Beer focused restaurant it now has. It oozes character and style, and it's walls tell a story. Situated on the corner of Scott & Telford St, it was built by J.T Toohey (Tooheys Brewery) in 1885. It was originally built as the Grain and keg storage facility, (Hence our Name) & acted as the Newcastle Depot. The original elevator shaft down to the underground basement is still there to this day and can be seen by customers. The Grain Store not only has a huge floor space inside, the new owners are excited to reveal the gorgeous indoor/outdoor Courtyard that many people never would have seen. A little 'Inner city Oasis' it is the perfect place to relax by yourself or with a group of friends. The Grain Store boasts a tap list totalling 21, featuring 100% independently owned and 100% Australian brewed, Craft Beers. This makes it one of the largest Craft Beer tap list in Australia. This allows us to always have the beer style of your liking available on tap at any given time to match up perfectly with our menu offerings. So whether it's a crisp pilsner, hoppy IPA, Smoked Porter or Dry stout, and everything else in between, it will be there for you to pair with our fresh, tasty food offering. We don't expect you to know everything about food & craft beer pairing. That's what our trained staff are for. We are very passionate about product knowledge and service when it comes to our food & Craft Beer and ensure that all our staff are dedicated to the cause! So come on down and allow us to share our knowledge and open your eyes to the world of Craft Beer and the amazing beer taste experiences and food pairing opportunities it can give you! We have a diverse all day menu that has been put together with love and passion, share plates for groups, quality pizza, and meals that work well with good beer.
This place has some serious funk. A plethora of craft beers to choose from. I recommend ‘the sneaky one’.
Plenty of Seating.
Large dining menu with fair prices. Unfortunately, the ‘little pigs pizza’ tasted more like dirt than anything else Kids chicken wrap was tasty.
I would go back here again just to sample more beers

I can't comment on the food but the reservation service is poor at best. After trying to phone for a booking on several occasions I left a message on the answering machine. In response, I recieved a text message no less than 7 days later, informing me that the requested date of reservation was unavailable. That's poor customer service at best, if not, downright rude. I won't be calling again

The Happy Wombat is a relaxed casual dining venue with a strong emphasis on local, ethically sourced ingredients. We have a wide variety of Australian Craft beer, Hunter Valley wines, and Australian Spirits.
We chose the share plates rather than a main each and they were all fantastic- super fresh, SO tasty, superb flavours. Craft beers were really good. Staff really friendly, attentive and helpful. Would highly recommend.
