Visiting from the UK, where we regularly enjoy Indian/Bangladeshi meals and takeaways, we decided to try this Indian restaurant in Mount Gambier. The dining experience was nowhere near what you would expect in the UK. The staff were friendly and service as good but there was little ambience and the food was all rather bland.

Mt Gambier does not have too many cafes and restaurants, so it was on the cards we would visit 'the bean'.
It might be quite new. It looks it: clean, modern, good furnishing, lots of space. Service is on the ball. Menu is not overly imaginative but what made me blink was the prices. Maybe it was a holiday menu?
That said, it is still one of the better cafés in the town.

This café/restaurant has table service. Has an extensive menu and wine selections. However it is very noisy and very hard to hear people across the table when chatting. There is very little carparking nearby, however it is centrally located adjacent to the Cave Gardens and Town Hall Complex and attracts a lot of patrons.

We select the best export quality beef available in the country. Our preference is for beef that is finished on grass as this provides meat with maximum flavor, just as nature intended. What we do differently at the Barn is that we age our beef on the premises for 8 weeks or longer. When you consider the work, the cost, the waste, is it really worthwhile to age beef for a long time? Most people and places say beef is aged when it is two weeks old. Like great wines that improve for 50 years, great beef gets sweeter, more tender and acquires a taste that cannot be duplicated except with proper aging.
The steaks are really outstanding, amongst the best we have had. Other dishes are competent rather than excellent- for example the desert - eton mess - does not have the contrast of crunch, cream and fruit it should have. The pate was ok but no more. Service is enthusiastic rather than efficient, very long waiting times - even for the bill.

Best Thai restaurant in Mount Gambier and Lime Stone Coast
Went with friends. When ordering made it very clear that we are vegetarians and ensured the ordered was read back. The soup was served with prawns - identified almost immediately and we notified the hostess. No apology - they were replaced at a decent interval with soups we had ordered in the first place. Rest of the meal went without incident though overall food was sub par to restaurants broadly similar. Then came the drama with the bill in charging us for the erroneous order. The owner/ chef was impolite, rude and obnoxious. We paid up but will never set foot here again. Crap customer attitude and very poor customer care. GotoSouthern Thai - better every way imaginable.

The night we visited there was a birthday celebration - either an 18th or 21st, so it was a tad noisy, but that can't be helped. The menu was fairly standard pub fare. I had the Roast of the Day, which was lovely, tender and plentiful. My wife liked her fish too. Considering how full the place was our meals arrived without too much delay. Lovely decor too. The only real issue I'd have is with the salad bar, where there was not a lot of variety or imagination. Two out of the 5 or 6 salads were pasta based, which excludes me being coeliac.

I have Eaten here twice since My last review of 1862 review and have been totally disappointed on both occasions !! I Always order the Scotch Fillet and have it cooked medium rare no sauces. Dined here early 2017 week night and main chef not there and steak was ordinary, dined here just before Christmas with a Client and main Chef was there but once again ordinary. Requested to be seated in the front dining room but put into the back room (naughty corner) !! Once was the best alternative to the Barn but no longer. Will be back one more time and I would like My steak hot and juicy not luke warm and tough having been sat under a heating lamp for 20 minutes and I want to sit where I request - wipe the table clean I can wait.

Ventured down to Macs for dinner. It is bar service so you order your food and drinks at two different stations. Pleasant staff so it went really well. There is a salad and veggie bar which is included in your meal price. The place was fairly busy but our food came out quickly. My wife had the calamari and I had the smoked beef rib. According to my wife the calamari was excellent and my beef rib was good. Lots of wall adornments which gave the place an unique ambiance. Overall pretty good!

The Whistling Cat is a vintage styled Cafe & Burger Bar. It is filled with beautiful vintage tables and chairs with some big comfy French provincial lounges suites. The Whistling Cat specialises in American Food & Burgers with well over 25 different burgers on our menu. All our burgers are freshly ground in house and cooked to order. We are predominately a burger bar but offer up other cafe style options for non burger lovers. We also do big crazy style freak-shakes. We offer a relaxed atmosphere with mainly soft rock music playing, with the tunes amped up to more of a rock'n'roll vibe on the weekends. We offer dine in or take-away, with calling ahead to pre-order your food the best option if you are on a lunch break or in a rush as we can get crazy busy at times. We take Reservations and the venue is also available to hire for functions. Whilst we are happy to accommodate for children we ask that you please note that being a shop filled with antique furniture and offering no specific children's menu, we are not a child friendly venue.
I feel I have to write a review given a recent negative post on Facebook which has obviously affected the lovely people who own this cafe. In my opinion, it wasn't warranted after our experience today. We called in this afternoon for a milkshake after soccer with the kids. Service was so friendly, quick and milkshakes and hot chips were delicious. The owners came to our table for a chat which was lovely and with our permission gave the kids a couple of chocolates each. Everything was so clean - all the floors were spotless, and the tables were neat and tidy.
It was a sweet little place to visit and I can't fault a thing. Owners are new and working hard, opening at 7am which in a regional town is great. Well worth a visit!

International award winning coffee, specialty All day breakfast and light lunch menu
We are breakfast foodies from Melbourne and the corn fritters at Cafe Melzar we’re perfect. Cooked just right, tasted great and the eggs and bacon with just the right doneness. Coffee was pretty good too. Highly recommended.
