We “whipped” off of Hwy 1 after seeing the giant “fried artichokes” sign. This place gets packed at lunch! The fried artichokes were great comfort food...yummy, and “so” California! The fish and chips looked wonderful as did the cheeseburger. A cute little stop off on your journey down Hwy. 1

My wife and I were traveling from San Simeon to San Francisco on our vacation (4/16/14) and the GPS had us take a very indirect route. We were getting hungry and saw a Burger King on a corner as we pulled into the lot I noticed a bakery sign in a strip mall that had a burrito sign in the window. We decided to try it, what a good move. It was the best burrito either of us have ever had. We ate in the car under a shady tree and then continued on our way.

Well this restaurant and coffee shop has the best sandwiches that I've ever enjoyed. They also have the most delicious fried artichokes within 100 miles!!
The staff Stephanie and Gabi are very social and pleasant. Bears room to sit and eat your lunch or you can take it to go. It's also great to have a nice selection of wines and since then attached to the building structure. Definitely a sandwich place you want to try at some point in your life...

Our drinks took forever and they were cold = ( the staff was most friendly to the locals. The shop was small but nice.

Big place, and quite busy. They have a good system for ordering at the counter-that definitely helps move people through. My husband tried the fish and scallops and chips and wasn't too fond of the scallops. I tried the Sicilian artichoke and wouldn't reccommend it. The artichoke itself was tough, and the filling was odd-mostly wet flour and cheese. The roasted one is probably better. The cappuccino was good-large and hot!

Everything in the menu was fantastic. Artichokes appetizer was like butter. The calamari appetizer was arguably the best I had ever eaten. Big pieces. Not the little rings you get other places.
The tri tip, sausage, rotisserie chicken was all so tender and juicy. And the bbq sauce was perfect.
Don't miss this place!!!

Latin fusion, vegetarian and vegan options. Sustainable seafood, all natural beef, pork, organic free range poultry. Live entertainment, venue for large private parties with wheel chair access.
We were staying next door at the Captain’s Inn on a cold February day and decided to cancel our Carmel restaurant reservations and just walk to Haute Enchilada for a margarita and an appetizer. By 6:30, the restaurant was packed. We sat at the super cool bar, ordered a grilled artichoke (Castroville is the artichoke capital of the world they say) and an absolutely amazing octopus salad plus their regular margarita and a beer. Everything was wonderful. Fire lamps greet you at the door, the place is a buzz with activity. In the day, they have a gallery. For those who drive, there is plenty of parking. Although there are Mexican items on the menu, this restaurant offers Central and South American specialties with an emphasis on Peruvian. Décor is fun and unique. Prices are fair. Service is great. You’ll have a very good meal. Walk across the bridge over the dunes and you will witness the ocean. Loved this place!

Close to home and close to the bike path. They serve up some really delicious French fried and grilled artichokes. They also serve burgers, tacos and Lumpia. Everything we've tried here has been delicious. My only complaint is, could be a little less expensive. $7.50 for one grilled artichoke is pretty steep, as far as I'm concerned.

When in Castroville, the Artichoke capitol of the US, stop in at the Big Artichole for local specialities. We had the Artichoke plate, consisting of: fried artichoke, artichoke dip, buttered artichoke, Fire glazed artichoke, maybe artichoke soup and definitely an Artichoke cupcake for desert. Delicious!
