Get to Matera quickly, because it’s still relatively undiscovered by foreign tourists. In town, visit the Domenico Ridola National Museum. Matera’s real claim to fame, though, and the reason it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the extensive series of cave dwellings ("i sassi") southeast of town, first inhabited by Benedictine and Basilian monks. You’ll see individual cells, chapels, and even some churches, many adorned with Byzantine decorations and frescoes.

fish and seafood specialty dishes of the tradition of Matera at 100 mt Piazza Vittorio Veneto at 100 meters entrance stones of Matera
Arrived without a reservation as this was our first visit to Matera. The restaurant was full, but we were offered a table if we waited 30 minutes. Perfect!
They were so nice and accommodating to please us. Even producing a starter not on the menu that I requested. The maître d presented us with freshly made almond marzipan and marshmallows following desert; a lovely touch.
Fresh oysters, mussels marinere, seafood pasta, swordfish ravioli and the fruit bosco dessert were delicious.
Thanks for a great evening

next to the great Gelato place we found really good pizzas. They are in the style of the area, thick bases , but beautifully cooked with quality ingredients .
prices are very reasonable, portions large, and no wonder they also had long queues at busy times. Very helpful staff too.Highly recommended

Recommended by chef Nicola in Osteria San Francesco where we had complete faith on him after trying there, this restaurant had actually another surprise found in Matera. A simple menu and everything was cooked to preserve its natural taste without being salty or greasy. AltraPizza, a few meters from the center of Matera, is a take away pizzeria with home Delivery service and 30 seats. Our pizzas, soft, light and crunchy, are the result of a maturation of 96 hours and cooking in a wood oven. Wide range of doughs (moringa, cereals, kamut, senatore cappelli and many others).
This place is incredibly busy and getting a table is quite hard. But once you do, the pizza is excellent. They put quite a lot of toppings on the pizza and a generous amount of cheese. The base is awesome and is freshly baked in the stone oven. Definitely worth a visit!

On our way to see the Carlo Levi paintings at the nearby museum we stopped in here, the name reminding us of our home in San Francisco, California.
The charming chef is an artist in the kitchen and the server was friendly, helpful, and most professional.
The black truffle pasta was a nice surprise but my wife's calzoni was as fresh as a few hours and was a chorus of subtle harmonic flavor.
Treat yourself before or after art with this fine place.

We looked for this place after seeing good reviews on here, and I'm sure glad that we found it.
They were very helpful explaining what each dish was and everything looked fresh and appetizing.
The food was fantastic. I had the pureed beans with greens (chicory?) and my wife had the roasted chicken portion with potatoes. We both had a glass of local wine to wash it down which was good value.
I would highly recommend this place for anyone looking to try some local dishes.

Homemade pasta shop with kitchen. We sell pasta during the day. for lunch or dinner, you can choose the pasta, the sauce and we cook for you. There are also some appettizer, second course and dessert.
We stopped by mid-afternoon and the lovely Giacomo invited us in, and explained how it works with different types of freshly homemade pasta and sauces to accompany.
We returned in the evening, and ended up ordering three pasta dishes. Everyone else was having the antipasto beforehand, which looked delicious and a large portion, but we had had something similar for lunch and it was so hard to actually decide what pasta to have that it made sense to stick to the ‘primi’ - all three dishes were simply superb!!
We also had the tiramisu for dessert which was amazing, and the house red was very much on the easy-drinking side of things.
Also, the service was impeccable, the place looks great and genuine, and it had a really good vibe to it.
One piece of advice: it’s worth booking beforehand as the place was full when we went.

A stiff place, where thy like to show off, whilst opening a bottle...but make other terrible mistakes...we ordered the watermelon with scallops received a pork sausage, this was rectified...and the scallops dish was wonderfull...they sugges pasta with truffle only to tell there is no truffle, again wonderfull pasta no discount...whilst the star of the dish is missing...followed by flavourless chewy chicken...expensive for what is is...certainly not the best in Maratea
