Asahiro is famous around Itoigawa. Ask a lot of people, especially in the Nou Region, where their favorite ramen is and they will say Asahiro without a moment's hesitation. Don't get me wrong, I can certainly see why it would be so popular, but if you've got a sensitive stomach like I do, you might want to steer clear of this one. The soup is fish and lard-based, a really rich and delicious combination, but one that leaves me in a sorry state afterward. Also, while I wouldn't say the service isn't rude, it's not exactly the kind of friendly service you expect from restaurants in Japan. I think that mostly has to do with how busy they are.
I don't make a point to visit this place often, although I do end up at it once or twice a year. If you really like rich flavors, then you might find a bowl at Asahiro is just what you're looking for.

I found out about black yakisoba (squid ink) from Japanese travel guides on Niigata prefecture. This restaurant came highly recommended for this dish. However, I was disappointed, because, visuals aside, the dish didn't taste that much different from a generic yakisoba at a random matsuri stand. "Average" is the right word. I'm glad I tried it but won't come back again.

Taki is one of my favorite places in Itoigawa for lunch or dinner. Almost everything here is handmade. Even the individual ingredients are either handmade by the owner or locally sourced! Costs maybe an extra 100 yen or two for the lunch, but totally worth it.
The dinner menu is much more extensive, so definitely visit during the evening and enjoy some excellent food with excellent Itoigawa sake!

Leaving Hakuba, we had 3 hours in Itoigawa before traveling onwards to Kyoto by train. Wanted to try the famously fresh seafood in Itoigawa for lunch. This place is comfortable walking distance from JR station for the family ~ 25mins brisk pace. We were ushered into a private dining room and basically requested for chef to feed us with some sashimi and sushi. Beautifully presented, deliciously fresh and reasonably priced. Nice setting and courteous hosts - perfect experience. Thank you!

We were on a huge seafood food tour of the area for the day and chatted with the manager Yohei for a long time. He went OUT OF HIS WAY to make sure we were taken care of. We especially were looking for whole crabs and he called around to other places and walked us over to the next restaurant AND THEN to the train station. The formaggio truffle pizza, wild boar ragu, bolognese, and pickled platter were all outstanding. I highly recommend this place and you will be so surprised how good the Italian food is in Japan-- Yohei is the man too!!! CHEERS! (from that american crew of folks)
