Faial Island (Portuguese pronunciation: [fɐˈjaɫ]), also known in English as Fayal, is a Portuguese island of the Central Group (Portuguese: Grupo Central) of the Azores. The Capelinhos Volcano, the westernmost point of the island, might as well be the westernmost point of Europe, if the Monchique Islet, near Flores Island, is considered part of North America, for it sits on the North American Plate.

Located behind the karts track, by the beach, this place is known because of their "francesinhas".
We had "lapas" (limpets) - the best we had in Madeira with plenty of garlic, the octopus salad, and fried filleted black scabbard fish - all extremely fresh, tender and in big portions, and at a great price.
Service is friendly and efficient.

Well actuality it is basically a do it yourself. A restaurant where you cook your own meat/fish/seafood on a hot stone. This was a fun and excellent experience food is great fresh and big enough portions. I loved the experience of the hot what i think its local basalt (actually stone from Terceira, I been told). About halfway through your meal they exchange the hot rock for a new one so you don't have to rush to cook your food before the rock cools off. You also have a couple of sauces and butter to put or dip your meats with after you cook your food. And the staff is always pleasant! Great atmosphere. Reasonable prices. Good value for money. Definitely worth it for the experience. Helpful and attentive staff. Reserve in advance, tables are rarely available last minute.

I have been here for dinner as it was recommended by local people as the only one restaurant in Horta cooking codfish based on the Portuguese tradition. Restaurant is often full so I had to reserve a table. The table reserved had only two stools instead of proper chairs and we were closed to the back door almost in the dark.
My glass smelt badly and the so called bread portion was composed by two pieces.
Codfish was really full of oil and garlic everywhere. I do not know if it was the traditional Portoguese receipt but the fish taste was completely covered by other tastes.
Restaurant was full of no Portoguese people. It was not a good choice.

This place is just amazing...go on Thursday night for the Portuguese buffet. We arrived at 7pm and were the first to arrive.. no Reservations needed... and within 30 minutes the place was packed. The owner puts out a wonderful spread... local fish, roast pork, roast beef, sausages, potatoes, cabbage, salads... the works. As of June 2017, all you can eat was 7 euro.

Horta restaurants and bars in my opinion can be divided in two groups : the old ones, extremely linked to the Portoguese tradition, no English speaking, extremely slow and the new generation which I like best. This teahouse is a very good example of the second generation of Portuguese people. Location has been very well renovated and has very nice garden. A lot of nice details are shown everywhere (have a look at the toilet) and best in class cookies and cakes from the Portuguese tradition with a modern touch are prepared by the young team.
Also toasts and sandwiches are available.
There are a lot of different kind of teas and you can also ask for advice to the team.
It would be a pity not being here before leaving Horta.

Almost in the middle of the Atlantic, Faial is an obligatory stopover for a lot of the ships there are crossing the ocean, from iates to sail and tall ships. Now, inside Faial there is a place where all this melting pot of sailors get together to share experiences and drinks, and this place it’s Peter’s.
With their our private Gin, tasted in several different ways, it’s a must go in Faial island.

This is a steak-only restaurant - so a reprieve from the endless grilled fish of the Azores, but as such, the menu is limited. All the steaks we had were wonderful. Service, as was our general experience in the Islands, was slow but not excruiatingly slow. Beautiful view from a couple of the tables, through sadly small windows.

After Reading reviews, decided to try this restaurant. We were unable to find prices beforehand but expected it to be inexpensive. There is no choice, 4 course surprise menu at 20 euros a head. We were given a small olive paste ball as appetizer, followed by tomato soup. This was nice spicy soup and filling. The next course was apparantly a rice dish (not noticeably rice) with a gloopy lemon, coconut sauce with a green herb.
The only vegetable we could discern in the rice was squash. This was accompanied by a few lettuce leaves, tomato and raw onion plus a few olives.
Dessert consisted of a chocolate cake that did not taste of chocolate but was dry and did not seem to have any dairy in it,accompanied by icecream with liebkuchen biscuit flavour, nice if not so heavy with ,liebkuchen flavour. I could not eat much of themain or dessert and left my partner to finish.
Was 48 total with house wine. Sorry but we did not enjoy and thought was expensive for ingredients used and what we got.

It was on our last evening on Faial that we visited Restaurant Athletico. We had tried a number of quite ordinary restaurants in Horta that provided adequate, but not outstanding fare. This was different; we received excellent service and tasted very good food. If we had stayed longer on the Island, we would have gone there again. This would be a very good restaurant in any part of the world, give it a try.

We loved Aldina, especially the owner, Aldina, after whom the restaurant is named. The unassuming facade overlooks the cliffs of the north coast of Faial. A modern eclectic but comfortable interior belies a quality of food that is exceptional. We visited twice. Aldina is knowledgable about local and Mainland wines and her suggestions are spot on. Mussels are amazing. We enjoyed both fish and meat. Portion size is very generous. Aldina accommodated our preferences and everything was perfectly cooked as ordered. The puddim da maracanja (passion fruit mousse) was to die for, pairing richness, lightness and crunch. Plan a visit during a tour around the gorgeous island of Faial.
