A bit difficult to find in the narrow streets, but then quite visible (even too much those Xmas-style lights). Kind service but not Italians in an Italian restaurant unfortunately. Food is far from Italian tradition, good nevertheless. I tried ravioli with truffle and I found ham on them... Interior not bad and price adequate. Not to repeat next time in Chatel.

I've eaten here three times and although it's undeniably a quality restaurant, I fail to see why people like it as much as they do; I really don't like the dining room, it seems dingy and lacks atmosphere. I always feel like I'm gatecrashing someone's home when arriving, weird vibe, not negative just odd. The salmon tartare is a dish that seems very popular but for me it's busy and has too many capers and too much mayo. The steak I had was all dressed up with fois gras and other unnecessary accompaniments that detract from what a steak is supposed to be.
In fact all the meals I've had here were fussy and didn't really know what they wanted to be; too many ingredients all vying for your pallet although all cooked and presented very well. Service passes the test and they have a great wine list but it's not my kind of place.

I have been to this wonderful restaurant a couple of times. It never disappoints. The food is nothing short of excellent. Service terrific. Best steak EVER from Limousin cattle. There's a really generous set menu for 30 Euros otherwise a la carte. It's worth every penny. Tremendously popular and filled with mostly locals. There's a proper rotisserie/grill for cooking steaks. Lots of other things on offer (kidneys, lamb, pork and fish) if steak not your thing. Must book. Visit la Ferme St Jacques you will not be disappointed!

There's a lot I love and hate about French cuisine and it's all here. Fabulous quality local ingredients cooked beautifully. Wild boar, local goats cheeses, fantastic wines and then on the down side, those tiny pre-starters and in-between course nibbles that are unnecessary, slimy and foaming. The whole La Gourmandine experience is fantastic but I can't give it five stars as it's just not entirely right for me. I don't understand why they take the wine away and keep it on a table across the room until the waiter (he's part-owner, Maitre'D, super-pro restauranteur and thoroughly good chap in reality) deems that you are ready for another dribble of France's finest. Monday nights are a bistro menu and very different from the rest of the week. It's quirky, they have fantastic ingredients, the full fine dining experience and the building is enchanting. My 4-stars is more like a 4.5 in reality - I'm being a very harsh reviewer giving a 4.

This was my last day in France. I was leaving via Chatellerault station. I wanted to take my friends out and they found this restaurant. So lovely to eat in someone's home. Everything was cooked to perfection. My main course was veal which I usually avoid because it is difficult to cook well. The menu is quite short - 4 choices for each course. You could pick at random and get a good meal whatever you chose. Highly-recommended. Need to book. I forgot to say - the price was good too.

As many reviews before have said, friendly staff, great food and very fair prices. Atmospheric resturant patronised by locals (esp at lunchtimes) and tourists. Thete is a TripAdvisor 2014 "Excellent" sticker in the window. I expect they get one for 2015 too.

My husband and I visited this restaurant for lunch and had the three course menu for 12 euros. The restaurant is very spacious and stylish. Nice staff, very pleasant and efficient, food well presented and tasty. Couldn't fault anything. Well frequented by the french. Very good value and would return hopefully to sit outside in the square on a nice day.

Went here with family including an 11 month old baby. Several of the party had the pizzas which were Ok and cheap enough but nothing special. I ordered penne Bolognese which was poor and there wasn't enough meat in the sauce. I asked for a very small portion of spaghetti Bolognese for the baby but was shown the child menu of meal, drink & dessert at 7 euros. I said no thanks as it was obvious it was no good for the baby. The waiter said OK I will do a spaghetti Bolognese on its own. When it came it was tagliatelle and a smaller portion to mine. We paid the bill but didn't realise until after we had left that the 'baby portion' had been charged as a normal portion of spaghetti Bolognese at 7 euros 10. We might as well have ordered the child menu. Will probably avoid in the future.
