Castro Urdiales is a seaport of northern Spain, in the autonomous community of Cantabria, situated on the Bay of Biscay. Castro Urdiales is a modern town, although its castle and the Gothic-style parish church of Santa María de la Asunción, date from the Middle Ages. Its chief industries are tourism, fishing, and the preservation of fish, especially sardines and anchovies, in oil. The "Lolin" and "La Castreña" anchovy canning factories serve as a reminder of the town's closeness to this industry and its proximity to the sea.

We are so fortunate my husband speaks Spanish fluently. A local couple we met on the street recommended this popular restaurant. She said the price is a little expensive, but well worth it. She was right.
While you could hunt around to find good food while saving a couple of bucks. . . this place, in the oldest part of the port, with a fantastic "elevated" view of the picturesque marina is obviously a local favorite. While we were there, a large family. . . to celebrate a "first communion". . . came in to occupy the separate dining room.
The waiters were busy, professional, and very efficient. We loved the Cod (Bacalao) . . . served Basque style with a delicious tomato based sauce. . . and the Monk fish (Rape) grilled with garlic and served with roasted potatoes and red peppers. Delicious Rose' by the glass. . . all for 48 Euros. Not inexpensive, but also not outrageous. The price seemed correct for a "high end" restaurant with a great view!

We'd dined in the hotel restaurant on our last visit, and found it to be fine. However, we were disappointed this trip! The food was average, bland and not very tasty at all. We didn't bother to have dessert or coffees. The service was very...MoreHello Jhon D, We can only apologise for the problems that you have, and tell you that we try to improve everyday, we hope to recieve you in the future, and you will see how much we have improve. Really good little place to get burgers, sandwiches and fries. Be warned though - on a weekend in summer the queues are huge and the wait can be long!

Deep Fried Calimari
followed by Turbot and a nice dessert, coffee and a bottle of the house white
All in dinner for 2 at 87 Euros.
This restaurant may have a menu outside, but basically it seems that once inside everything is offered verbally, so difficult to gauge pricing.
Interior is traditional.
Waiting staff friendly
Friend asked for a cappuccino at the end of the meal, I asked for expresso., the waiter eyed friend suspiciously, and said, so...."Dos Expressos Si?".
I guess they're creatures of habit.
The food was excellent, especially the turbot which friend and I devoured with relish!
Not for everyone but a good evening meal in the heart of the old town.

We had a typical sidreria menu with cod omelette and huge steak 'chuleton' for 2 and it was very good, though not cheap.

Visited this restaurant three times whilst in Castro recently on a family holiday. Each time the food was excellent. It is situated a street back from the Promenade and has relaxed atmosphere.
The menu features local classics and always a good choice of very fresh local fish. We liked the sopa pescado (fish soup) and the Cocido Montanes (mountain stew) all served in huge portions for starters.
On second courses everything was well cooked and always fresh. Local fish cooked perfectly.
On most occasions we stayed with the menu of the day, but we had paella one night which was delicious and cooked to order. Drinks included in the set menu were healthy measures. My daughter asked for a vodka and coke and was very impressed!
The restaurant is owned by Jose who is very friendly. Service is efficient and we both worked hard on improving our Spanish and English translation skills respectively. If you want local food at sensible prices I recommend.

On the Camino we were recommended this place and it was rally good, great Terrace overlooking the harbour where the fish catches come in. The service was ok but a bit erratic but the food was great and the sardines were beautiful and fresh. The scallops au gratin were really nice and perfectly cooked and the Albariño was great.

We found this restaurant by accident. We took an exit on our way to Bilbao, drove around and came across this local restaurant. Wow! what an amazing experience! We could not speak Spanish, but the owner's wife spoke good English and made us feel welcomed and comfortable. The service as well as the food was excellent. Very reasonably priced. The owner was very friendly and respectful of us even though his English was not very fluent. They have a wine cellar at the back of the restaurant. We ended up buying some bottles wine in addition to enjoying a great lunch.

Es un local donde vuelvo y repito aunque la ración de tortilla sea más pequeña. Las anchoas también muy ricas. Es un sitio con un encanto especial.

As our pension was on the same street as Bar Javi, we had some snacks there in the evening when coming back to our place. They serve some nice pinchos - we tried classic Gilda (green olive, anchovy and peppers), one with breaded and fried eggplant and one with goat cheese. All tasty, plus some white wine. The bill came to less than 10 euros so good value. Bar is not very large so may get crowded on weekends.
