An ancient town of just under 3,000 between Florence and Siena, picture-perfect Castellina In Chianti is set in the wine-famous Chianti Hills. The many wonderful sights include the imposing 14th-century Rocca (Fortress), offering spectacular views of the town and surrounding countryside, the 16th-century San Salvatore church and the Via delle Volte medieval arched passageway. Just outside of town are the pre-Roman Etruscan burial tombs of Monte Calvario and the Necropolis of Poggino.

Completely dissatisfied. First negative review I have ever submitted. Completely inundated with flies to the extent we had to cover the meal. Service came across as arrogant at times. Way too expensive for such a poor experience

The Stiaccini family owners of the ancient restaurant Trattoria "La Torre" have been actively operating for nearly a century . Five generations have dedicated Themselves to providing their guests With typical Tuscan cooking based on simplicity of preparation and discriminating use of the best products available in Chianti. The base ingredientes of their dishes are typical of the Chianti region: Wine, oil, free range foWl, Wild game, lamb and pork, beef from nearby Valdichiana, fresh local produce and wild mushrooms. Their traditional dishes are accompanied by a vast selection of the best Chianti Classico wines.
It's a family restaurant selling good food at not-outrageous prices. That's probably why it continues to thrive after feeding locals and visitors for more than a century. We went on a Saturday evening in July. We hadn't booked, but the staff found us a good table outside and were courteous and efficient. The meal was exactly what we'd bargained for - good, hearty local cooking. Try the orange torte - it's outrageously good. We don't drink, so the bill for three sated, happy people came to €75. Not the cheapest in town, but still far from the priciest and we left happy.

We received a recommendation for this restaurant from fellow guests in San Gimingnano. Its a pretty 45 min drive from there to the restaurant, situated in a tiny hamlet.
On arrival the patron couldn't be described as effusive but directed us to take any table and walked away. Fortunately, the table service improved. Guests seated on either side chatted to us.
The menu is good, the surroundings are pretty. I enjoyed a ravioli starter followed by risotto. Sounds simple and mundane but it was in fact very sophisticated not over-worked but with subtle flavours and a light touch. Loved it!

Well located and busy place... food OK and staff friendly and work hard. Nothing that really stands out. The menu is fairly standard, the atmosphere is OK...

Culinary tradition has always been very important in Fonterutoli as it expresses the culture of the Chianti Classico area. Marchesi Mazzei has opened the new “Osteria di Fonterutoli” in a completely restored old Tuscan country home overlooking the vineyards in order to offer to its guests a great food experience. The restaurant will be a resting point for the travellers and “food lovers” as it was in the past. The local dishes offered, perfectly match our wines and make them more enjoyable. Our Enoteca, located just in front of the Osteria, offers the opportunity to taste fine wines produced in the winery’s vineyards and to carry out guided tours of the medieval centre and the cellars, included the new impressive cellar.
Just had an amazing night at this precious osteria. My family SO enjoyed our two evenings at this precious place! We had been many years ago and found that they had now moved across the street to an adorable building on the main Chianti road alongside their vineyard. Sitting outside under umbrellas by their vines, some enjoyed papperdelle with wild boar sauce and others the wild board fricassee. We all enjoyed the wine and dessert, especially the rose on a hot night! Sine we had been earlier in the week and returned, the staff was so nice to bring us all complimentary prosecco upon arrival! I highly recommend that you try this relaxing, unpretentious place with excellent food....real seasonal Italian at reasonable cost and lovely environs. One suggestion: you must make a reservation to sit outside at sunset, like most restaurants this time of year.

We loved this restaurant! The outdoor patio is absolutely beautiful and romantic and has twinkle lights all throughout. Service was excellent. We were able to get in without a reservation. They offer buffet style antipasti and it was fun to try all of the selections! Pizzas were huge and prices were extremely reasonable. One of our favorite stops in Italy. We wish we could go again!

Stopped in for a relaxing lunch, the weather was great so we sat outside under the shaded area that was provided.
Wee all shared the Entree's of Antipasti, Mozzarella and local Tomatoes which were exceptionally fresh and tasty.
Next onto the pasta for mains and again very tasty and fresh. We had come from their cellar door after some tasting so lunch was paired with some of the wines from Rocca Delle Macie Winery which were magnificent.
Great views, excellent service and very fresh and tasty food, we worth an afternoon out.

Classic Italian restaurant in an interesting spot (a covered walkway effectively under the castle). We visited for dinner but lunch would be good as it is sheltered out of the heat with good views through the windows.
The food was more restaurant standard and style rather than the Trattoria fare that abounds in the town.
Was a little worried Reading previous reports on gruff service - I think it was the owner who served us and he was charming, pleasant and very knowledgeable and attentive.
The house wine was great by the glass.
Tried 3 restaurants in town and this was probably the best.

We have been fortunate enough to visit wonderful Tuscany, and notably Castellina-in-Chianti, once or twice a year for several years and on each and every occasion visit many local eateries. The restaurant is located on the SR222 Chiantigiana as you leave Castellina-in-Chianti travelling south toward Fonerutoli .
We first sampled La Chiantina Osteria a few years ago, when we visited with our great friends Marco & Giovanna who, at the time were living in near Fonterutoli. On the recollection of that enjoyable experience we thought that we would visit the restaurant ourselves (just the two of us this time) during our stay in the town this year (Aug 2015).
We noticed some artwork on the wall from a reputable (and some would say mildly eccentric) local artist, and indeed he did turn up later as we were leaving.
We were greeted warmly (it was the night of a thunderstorm and we were once of the first diners that evening although the restaurant soon filled with predominately local people which is often a good sign). Our starter course was a relatively simple affair of meat and cheese served with deep fried pizza dough balls, the house-wine was very drinkable and the waiter was personable, attentive and helpful. All in all things were looking good. Regrettably it seem to go downhill from there.
We began to wonder if there had been a change of ownership since our last visit (during 2013), or whether the main chef was having a night off on this occasion. Despite an order of “medium and still pink” beef, my wife’s main course meat and onion dish was a disappointing plate of overcooked (potentially reheated?) braising steak under a pile of long pre-prepared onion marmalade, and my dish of assorted fried meats (the menu said a combination of chicken and rabbit) appeared purely to be further extensive use of the deep fat fryer with a plate of battered bones and a few oily and battered tired vegetables. We had also asked for a plate of potatoes to accompany our meat dishes, and this dish only served to confirm the kitchens obvious delight in using their deep-fat fryer to produce some oily chips. (As such everything I consumed in my main course had found its way to my plate via the deep-fat fryer, which on reflection is very unusual for Italian cuisine). Some might say I could have chosen something more indigenous I suppose, but I remain convinced that “Carni Fritto Misto” is a Tuscan dish and there are far better versions of it !
In view of the disappointing secondi platers we decided to cut our loses and not try a dessert or even coffee. We are lucky enough to know many places in the town that serve very good coffee, desserts or gelato.
We are concerned that this restaurant has slipped down the list but we hope for the sake of future diners that this was just a one-off bad night for somewhere that has a great location

Wine Tasting, Wine Shop, Enoteca Nuvolari, in the heart of Chianti Classico, is a high quality wine bar and shop. At the same time you can taste typical local dishes, prepared with care and served in a friendly and professional spirit. You can have a quick break in the morning or stop for lunch or dinner.
We were two families staying nearby and were able to walk to the restaurant. We ate there twice and both meals were excellent. The most memorable element being the wild boar Raghu pasta and incredibly juicy and full of taste T bone steaks. Worth going for the meat alone. Wine was local and enjoyable, prices keen but not cheap.
