Just 12 miles southeast of Santa Barbara, Carpinteria (called “Carp” by locals) is a charming, coastal community with a pedestrian-friendly main street (Linden Avenue), mom-and-pop shops, gourmet cafés and antique stores. The pavement leads to Carpinteria’s sparkling beaches, including Carpinteria State Beach, dubbed “the world’s safest beach.” Beyond the shoreline, Carpinteria’s foothills and verdant mountains are peppered with flower nurseries, polo fields, avocado orchards and horse ranches.

Think of a catered beach side picnic and you'll understand this well known Summerland restaurant. There are sand boxes for the kiddies and picnic tables for everyone. Aside from the fresh food there is also beer and wine--what ,more could you ask for? The only downside are the lines...go early and, if possible, during the week!

Contemporary exterior with artsy interior. Interesting menu options including vegan and gluten free. Pastries and cupcakes are jewels behind glass. Had the KC breakfast of kale, goat cheese and roasted potatoes topped with 2 eggs and green onions. Hubby had quinoa breakfast bowl which wasn’t in a bowl but layered in bowl concept on a plate. Tasty. Also shared avocado toast on sourdough with side greens and a balsamic dressing. Would have been better with a nice grassy olive oil but nonetheless tasty and fresh. Purchased a key lime coconut cupcake and chocolate bliss cupcake for the road. Can’t wait to try.

Truly excellent espresso, the real test of any coffee establishment. Though just short of world class, Lucky Llama is close and I happily enjoyed it each morning in town. Easy parking and nice indoor and outdoor seating areas make for nice people watching while sipping the nectar.

Nice choice of beer and food. Quick friendly service, Place was clean, different style of food on the menu, not your ordinary sandwiches. Burrito with fries inside instead if rice was interesting

I found Pacific Health Foods as I walked to dinner my first evening in town. What a great little grocery and health food store for folks who are visiting for a few days or longer. Stocked with all sorts of great snacks, waters and drinks. I stocked up on a selection of waters, granola and snacks for the hotel.
The smoothie menu looked great, however I didn't partake of them during my visit.
Folks are SUPER friendly inside if you need any assistance.

Especially love their Spring Rolls, their Asparagus salad, their Garlic Pepper Shrimp, Delicious!
Great service, small little area, headed towards the beach, great fun towards the end of the month, when they have local concerts happening close by, or movies on the park lawn during the summer.

Handmade French chocolates truffles and Bonbons. We are: Seduction of the eyes Sensation of the lips Tantalization of the tongue Heaven for the taste buds We are Chocolats du CaliBressan
This is a small shop at the industrial end of Carpenteria which would be easy to miss but shouldn't be. Chocolates are beautiful and have intense flavor. There is a wide assortment of strange and beautiful combinations of flavors. The help is delightful. You can buy one piece or a box of many different sizes. You can select your own or buy a selection. I can't really recommend any piece because everything we have had so far has been exquisite. If you are in Carpenteria or driving by on the freeway, it is worth the few minutes to stop in!

A delicious chili!! Chicken, red onion, cheddar cheese, black bean chili with guacamole, sour cream and corn tortilla strips on top, oh my a delicious meal with the right amount of spice. My friend...enjoyed a half turkey-stack sandwich with a wild rice and mushroom soup combo special....tasty lunch and very good with included chips and pickle.
Flourless chocolate cake....yikes, no worries ....have 28 mile bike ride back so why not!?! The dessert with cream, blackberries and whipped cream on top of the cake! Yum! Iced tea and we were asked if we wanted straws! Yippee, but no thank you...less waste for landfill. Small outdoor patio here with 3 tables and enough space for us to park our bicycles. This restaurant is along Pacific Coast Highway so it is very easy to pull in on our bikes. Ready for a good lunch and then bicycling back to Ojai, CA...about 28 miles for our return ride.

We heard that the milkshake at Foster’s Freeze was a California tradition and we couldn’t visit California without trying it. The shake is good but if you have ever been to a Dairy Queen it is very similar to that. If you have a craving for a shake give it a try but it must be a California thing to say it is something special.
