Top 10 Resorts in Seogwipo, South Korea

May 8, 2023 Veronika Gaddis

On the south side of Jeju Island, Seogwipo offers swanky hotels, rugged cliffs, popular beaches and gorgeous waterfalls. The volcanic-rock cliffs located around Jungmun beach are a wonder. Make sure to visit the viewing platform to take in the spectacular vistas. A coastal city, Seogwipo's many activities revolve around the ocean, including diving and submarine tours. Many of the restaurants specialize in fresh, local seafood. There's also much to see and do inland, including temples, art museums, amusement parks and botanical gardens.

Foreigners limited

Reviewed By verobombero

Overall, good service and some staff members do their best to communicate in English and deal with foreigners. The hotel is for couples or families without children. The pools are limiting small children. Some pools and jacuzzis are only for adults. No special pool for small children. This is complicated for parents with kids of different ages. Good buffet breakfast and excellent musical group singing by the pool.

A large and high quality resort - visit before the tourists re-emerge!

Reviewed By Rapwalk

The Somerset resort provides excellent apartments that are spacious and well-equipped. We could not fault the attention to detail and the quality of the accommodation. The resort is massive and has many restaurants, two theme parks, a casino and pools. Covid has of course reduced the range of activities on offers (such as at the adventure theme park), but there was still plenty to do. The range of restaurants and eateries is good, with the standout being the La Chinoise chinese retaurant. There are fewer bars than you would expect, and being served drinks in plastic containers is a bit cheap and nasty (are they expecting a soccer riot?). There are a range of pools, though many are packed with little children, so be warned. We did not visit the casino, as we neither launder money nor enjoy losing it, however it did give an insight that the resort is built primarily to extract cash from the Chinese market. The resort must have been built with Chinese money, as I do find the lack of a fourth floor to be somewhat tedious and the closed-down duty free shops are a waste of space. While four may sound like death in Chinese, the mere existence of the number has little correlation with anyone coming further or closer to their ultimate demise, so it is trite for a quality resort to pander to petty superstition, especially when Covid is so much scarier than a fourth floor. The resort will work well for families, so do come and visit before the mass market arrives back and spoils it. There are also many activities in the local area to enjoy. And finally, it is all quite expensive, so be warned. If you do go to the casino, put your chip on number 4 and spend your winnings recouping the costs of the drinks.

Good but.....

Reviewed By Planetkimchi

It was our second stay at the hotel (not resort next door) and we’ve enjoyed both visits, but there are a few issues. It’s a solid 4 star hotel in my opinion - for 5 stars the service and amenities are not quite up to scratch. All the staff need briefing on Covid etiquette because the Korean media (like all problems) have managed to convince the Korean people it’s a foreign issue. Therefore, if you’re a foreigner, then you almost certainly have Covid seems to be the logic. Forget the fact it is an Asian born pandemic solved by western medicine and the fact any foreigner entering to hotel will have likely had many more PCR tests to be there than the average Korean! Like previous visitors I got told I have to wear a swim cap inside, but not outside in the pool area. It’s the same pool with the same filter system so it’s hard to understand why this rule is in place. It’s a very Asian rule - swimming pools around the world work fine without people wearing swim caps, but Korean hotels love rules. Having swam I got changed and went up to the gym. A staff member came and told me I can’t workout in the same clothes I swam in. I told him I got changed and offered him my dry tshirt to touch. He then said I need to go change into hotel provided clothes. I said I’m fine in my own. He then said I need to go tell reception I’m using the gym. I said I’ve already checked into the pool/gym. He then said I need to go check my temperature again. I said I’ve checked my temperature when I checked in and that I’m not going anywhere. He left. There is no way Korean guests are getting this amount of unwanted attention. The manager needs to brief his staff. For the price, the breakfast buffet needs work. The quality of sausage is poor - I know good sausage in Korea is hard to find but that’s what the 5th star is about. The bacon was undercooked. I asked for a poached egg as it’s always a great indicator of how good the hotel is - try it when you travel! The egg station staff didn’t know what a poached egg was so I showed them a photo. I was told “no”. Easy to do, but “no”. I suggest the restaurant manger has a morning devoted to eggs. Requests like that should be brought over to the table like in any other 5 star hotel. I asked for an English Breakfast tea and was given a mug filled with hot milk and a tea bag plonked into it! See the photo! Ha - 5 star?! I sat down, but then thought I should show them. I asked for a pot of hot water. They didn’t have a pot except for one on display so I took that! I then asked for milk in a jug and a cup, saucer, teabag and teaspoon and put them all on a tray together. I told them that’s how you serve English Breakfast tea. We are the dinner buffet on our first visit and it was good but very expensive. If you fancy a homemade burger, ribs and a beer I recommend that you walk over the road to ‘Wave’ bar - delicious! Overall, the hotel is nice and so are most of the staff. We’ve enjoyed our stays here. I’m just not convinced it’s worth the money unless you’re rich and don’t care.

Are we at resort?

Reviewed By Panddady

There were many great factors in this resort having beautiful view, aquarium near by, clean air, relaxing atmosphere, breakfast was outstanding. On and on.... But while the resort is with all the goods and great natural resources, I wasn't sure if I was in resort. Felt like I was in very nice and well assorted apartment. I wasn't sure if I was at Jeju. While the other resort area have a atmosphere of "resort", it was questionable. Although, there is also a point of view how vacation doesn't need to take place is so very special place. This resort is not packed with tourists, which gives you a very "rich" atmosphere. Enjoy walking, enjoy reading book to your child, enjoy just watching the ocean or simply take a nap with nice wind.

Amazing location!

Reviewed By Mark E

Be aware that a lot of the reviews for this hotel are out of date. There are now at least six restaurants within close walking distance, including an amazing sushi place and pizza/pasta place. We didn’t have a car and it really wasn’t a problem; hotel staff called a taxi for us and one would arrive in minutes. Taxis here are much cheaper than the US, it cost about $4-5 to go to World Cup Stadium where you can connect to the airport bus or other lines. We stayed in room 304, which as a great view of the ocean on one side (although the view of Tiger Island is partially blocked by another hotel) and of Mt. Halla out the kitchen window. The village around the hotel is lively, as it’s a great place to walk/run and take in the waters (no beaches, although the hotel has a small pool). The rooms were clean and spacious and the staff was quick to respond to any needs. Wonderful breakfast anchored by all you can eat eggs, which you can fry yourself, and sausage, although there is also cereals and other foods. If you are really looking to “get away” from the city and more tourist areas, this location and hotel are a perfect spot.

Basic hotel with good location

Reviewed By sinnyi

Booked this hotel because of it's location - near to Seongsan port & Ilchulbong. It is a decent hotel with most basic amenities supplied, but bear in mind this hotel does not supply one-time-use items such as toothbrush, cotton buds etc. This hotel is just 5-10 minutes drive away from Ilchulbong and Seongsan port, convenient for those who want to pay a visit to these attractions. Overall it's an average hotel, maybe you could choose to stay somewhere else if you can find a better deal than what Brownsuites can offer. Pros: 1. Location 2. Multilingual staff - there's a frontdesk guy who is able to speak English well 3. Ample parking space Cons: 1. One-time-use toiletries are not provided 2. No floor mat provided, if the bathroom is flooded, your room will be, too. 3. Warm water for shower only last 30 minutes, after 30 minutes you have to wait another 1 hour to get warm water again, which is pretty ridiculous for a hotel. 4. Aircond will auto turn off when room temperature is low and auto turn on again later, no way you can avoid this.
