Fantastic working cattle ranch!
I have been to the ranch several times, and I have always found the staff to be kind and caring. My most recent trip, however, really put that to the test. Through no fault of the horses or the staff at the ranch my daughter took a tumble off of the horse she was riding. From the moment it happened until the moment we left the ranch the staff kept a close eye on her (and her mama). A staff member insisted we go to the ER; she drove us to Kalispell and stayed with us the whole time - refusing to be reimbursed for her time or travel expenses. Thankfully my girl was able to ride the rest of the week. I can never repay the kindness and attention every employee of the ranch gave to her. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced rider, a first timer or a return guest, rest assured you will receive nothing but A+ service and attention from everyone at the ranch. Sue, Scott, Janice, Ash, Rachel, Anna, Ahna, Alyssa, Brenda, Roby, Des & Shayne (and whoever I've missed) - you have my undying affection and gratitude.

We had a great time cross country skiing at Lone Mountain Ranch. The staff was very friendly and helpful in getting us set up with the right rental equipment and showing us which trails on the map we should do. The equipment was well maintained. The trails were groomed well but could have benefited from slightly better signage. We had so much fun skiing and enjoying the beautiful views of the surrounding mountains.

Wide open spaces, the hard-working cowboy, his spirited cow pony, and vast herds of cattle are among the strongest symbols of the American West. Once the headquarters of a 10 million acre cattle empire, Grant-Kohrs Ranch National Historic Site preserves these symbols and commemorates the role of cattlemen in American history.
Conrad Kohrs (grandson of the founding Kohrs) sold this ranch and everything in and associated with it, from furniture, horse carriages, tack room, chuck wagon, etc, etc... to all of the original business records dating from the 1860’s to the National Parks Service (NPS) in 1972. NPS added a guided tour of the main house, info for self-guided tours of the blacksmith, bunkhouse, tack room, and cowboy kitchen. Also, NPS added a timeline from the 1860’s through to 1993 (Conrad’s death) that covers history of ranching locally, regionally, and nationally. As a result, the G-K Ranch is an interesting and thorough slice of history of Montana and the Western US. Go out of your way to visit. It’s free, too!
