It is a favorite holiday destination for many local South Africans. It is about 40 minutes north of Durban. There are plenty of fishing spots along the coast from Salt Rock, through Shaka's Rock to Ballito and Salmon Bay. Salt Rock owes much of its history to Basil Hulett and his wife Gwen who started not only the Salt Rock Hotel but went on to develop the town of Salt Rock as found today. Nightlife in the small town is limited with a handful of pubs and restaurants offering a variety of food and drinks. A new development, Sheffield Manor, is situated in Salt Rock as well as the newly built Tiffany's Shopping Mall.

A pretty much perfect lunch place and our first meal in South Africa, this trip. We were wrecked by an overnight flight, arriving at 5am, but a couple of hours sleep was all we needed to restore ourselves. A short walk along the beach front from our hotel brought us here. Thereâs an excellent burger, topped with avocado and bacon. And a ham and cheese sandwich. Both with chips. And a nice surprise to see malt vinegar for the chips â one of the good legacies of colonial times, I suppose (along with cricket).

During the last month we have been to this restaurant several times. The main pub overlooks a dam which has kids facilities by the dozen. The service is outstanding and the grub, mostly pub style, is tasty. We like this place for the friendly atmosphere and will go back.

Saltyz was known for its peri peri chicken and curries. We frequented the place when in the area. I was back there in the week and I was totally disappointed, the chicken was overdone like in dry, it had a fishy taste and the trademark sauce was a burny watery mess. Its location is great and its really nice sitting on the deck, the place is clean, service is OK but if there is a next time I think it will be only for drinks.

I really loved this place, itâs in a great location, beautiful people, phenomenal food, great staff and the design is good. The food is prepared fresh as per order, handcrafted in-house ( such a great selling/ marketing point for the restaurant). I will highly suggest that the servers inform the guests about the wait as we had an expectant mom with us and she was a lil annoyed about the wait. The managers are hands-on and checking with all the tables. The servers work very well as a team as we were a big table and very demanding but they all came to the table to assists their colleague and even took drink orders from us. Great service and I will definitely come back!

Ask any regular diner on the North Coast and most will tell you that the traditional Salt Rock Hotel curry is the best in town. Don't ask be about their famous buffet as i have not tried it only because I always call for the curry. Service is prompt and with a smile but the price could be more competetive.

In London, where I live, this place would be booked out for months ahead. Yet every time we go mid-week there are just 2 or 3 tables occupied. Cmon Natal.
