When 13th-century Portuguese Queen Isabel passed through Obidos and marveled at its beauty, her husband King Denis I simply gave it to her. For centuries after, the kings of Portugal followed suit, presenting the picturesque little town to their queens as a wedding gift. With its white buildings shining as brightly now as then, the walled city of Obidos is very popular with tourists, its hillside location offering amazing views of the Estremadura area. The medieval castle is a main attraction.

With only 2 full days in Lisbon, I wanted to book a tour that would allow us to see as much as possible. The most popular tours on TripAdvisor are the walking tours, however in the 4 hours they allow to only cover one, possibly two of the most popular neighborhoods in Lisbon, I kept scrolling until page 4 of tours when I came across THIS tour from Essencia da Latitude. For 5 hours we got every part of Lisbon and in the hot temps, we were privately chauffeured around by Daniel (superb!) but then stopped often for a good view or to see the various monuments or churches that make Lisbon so special. Growing up and still living in Lisbon, Daniel was an excellent guide as he knew everything! We could tell he was very proud of his city and he loved showing us as much as possible. He was a whizz at maneuvering through the vey narrow streets of old Lisbon, but then took us far away from the old part to also include the newer parts of the city. My husband and I later said we never would have been able to cover all of that ground on our own, even if we had stayed in Lisbon longer. After doing this tour, we felt we HAD seen and learned everything there was to about Lisbon and chose to spend out last day outside of the city. I also chose this tour because it was labeled with the “clean and safe” stamp and by being in a private tour we were even more assured that our contact with others would be at a minimum. Both we and Daniel wore masks, which did NOT take away from enjoying the tour, plus Daniel always opened and closed the vehicle door FOR us, also a hygiene measure. Daniel was very proud of the fact that Lisbon is making all attempts to “go green” for a lack of a better word and stops for water included a cooler with a glass flask with water and served in paper cups. We do hope that once the Covid period allows Portugal to fully recover, they can continue this effort and gain more world recognition for it. At the end of our tour, Daniel gave us many recommendations for restaurants and sightseeing and followed up per WhatsApp to make sure we had our answers and to thank us again for allowing him to show us Lisbon. We have never had such a friendly, interesting and downright good person as a tour guide before and we HIGHLY recommend Daniel and Essencia da Latitude. In closing I would just like to say that overall, we as Swiss felt SAFER in Portugal than we do here in our own country. The Portuguese continue to take the Covid situation very seriously and sanitizing and mask wearing have become the norm there, even out in the open streets...it became second nature to us and a small price to pay for being able to stay healthy and enjoy traveling in such a beautiful country as Portugal!!!!

Andre was an amazing guide and the trail was one of a kind. Never in a million years could I have navigated it without him. We had a great conversation and the time flew by. It was a great way to get outside the city of Lisbon and explore. It is a bit challenging in parts and when the guide tells you to wear pants, trust them :)

This is a late review, but necessary. We thoroughly enjoyed our private day tour with Sintra Magik in Fatima. The Shrine of course was incredible. The visit to the family home and meeting their descendants were equally touching. We sampled the local cuisine and appreciated the hospitality. Our tour of the religious factory allowed us to return with artifacts for our family. We were so fortunate to have a delightful Irish priest bless these keepsakes. An awesome, memorable day. We highly, highly recommend this tour group.

We were very much looking forward to this tour but unfortunately the weather wasn't that great especially by Portuguese standards we were told. However it turned out to be a wonderful day out. Evora is beautiful. We also got the chance to learn everything about cork and olive oil and buy REAL cork items since a lot of it in the corner shops in Lisbon seems to be fake. Great lunch (be careful if you're a vegetarian since there aren't a lot of options and that applies to Portugal in general) and amazing wines with a very informative and enthusiastic presentation from Mariana at Ribafreixo (?) estate. Our guide Paolo was also very polite and knowledgeable. Highly recommend.

Sanctuary of Fatima represents the great symbolism of the apparition of the virgin Mary to the three shipyards. Though if you are not a religious person, its atmosphere and whole around Fatima inspires a peaceful place in particular the large walking area. After a stop at Fátima, you will be visiting Batalha other historical mark city with its impressive gothic monastery. In the next stop, it is your decision either visiting Nazaré or Village of Óbidos. Nazaré is a fisherman village with the famous record surfer waves in the world. In addition to the big waves you can admire its cliffs, canyons and the beautiful sightseeing with the endless sea from the beautiful fort. The other option is visiting the inland medieval village of Óbidos with its unique surrounded fortified walls. Inside, it presents its beautiful cobbled streets, shops and traditional colourful houses dated back from 13th century. The Ginjinha is the famous typical liqueur you won’t miss.

Our second day out with Rui. After a drive through the hills we arrived at Quinta Santa Maria in Gidril, a village perched on the edge of a valley. We were greeted by our British expat host who guided us through the beautiful grounds and outbuildings of the Quinta tasting wines and enjoying nibbles along the way. The wines were flavourful, and the nibbles carefully chosen to enhance each we tasted. Before leaving we purchased a couple of bottles to savour at home, of course! Next stop of the day was The Monastery at Mafra. While this 400 room palace may once have housed a monastery, it was the biggest and most ornate of the several palaces we were able to visit during our time in Portugal- built with Brazilian gold and reputed to have emptied the treasury! Rui will do custom tours, as ell: For our third trip we have Rui taking us on a self-designed Templar Castle tour. We suggested three sites we wished to visit and he put together our itinerary ending with a boat ride to The island of Castelo Almourol. Bound to be another magical day!
