The Elblag Canal, also called the Elblag-Ostroda Canal, is a 150-years-old canal in Poland that runs from Elblag to Ostroda. At over 80 km in length, it is the longest navigable canal still in use in Poland. It is also one of the most interesting canals in Europe. Elblag Canal’s uniqueness arises from its peculiar choice of engineering to tackle a particularly difficult section of the route where the water level rises by 100 meters. This particular section is located between Druzno Lake and Piniewo Lake, a distance of about 10 km. Because the difference in height was too large, it was impractical to build traditional locks. Instead, an ingenious system of inclined planes was employed where the boats are lifted out of the water and placed into tracks and dragged across dry lands.

Seldom I get to meet someone who is soulfully connected to their community, knows its history, understands its culture, has insights into its present conditions and actively cares for its harmonious and beneficial future. This is the kind of person I experience the operator of this tour to be, and this in itself was an inspiring experience in itself - deserving the 5 star review. As for the castle - it is amazing! The enormity of it, as well as the preservation state is impressive. Even though not built by the Poles, it is a significant element of the complex Polish culture, giving particular insight into the nature of relation with their western neighbours, the Germans. On the first glance, it is a symbol of pride, of defeating a seemingly superior yet oppressive force and a landmark of self-confidence and hope - much needed by the Polish people. But looking even deeper I hope it could become an inspiration for a new era of the Polish-German relationship - where these two nations could combine their complimentary qualities, letting go of the past grievances - taking German focus and Polish spirit to create something beauty of which will stand the test of time even more than the Malbork Castle. As you can see, I did find aunexpected value in the experience and likewise invite those of you reading it not only to enjoy this tour, but to always look beyond the obvious :)

I joined the 3 hour cycle tour, which was a brilliant introduction to the diverse nature of Gdansk, including the port. Bozena is a great guide, very knowledgable, interesting, and patient when we wished to snap away more before moving on! She also frequently offered to take photos of us and provided some good tips on more hidden places to eat and visit. I strongly recommend this tour for getting a snapshot of this great city. Many thanks Bozena! Paul

Every history enthusiast should visit this place, as Wolf’s Lair is a complex of huge and tremendous bunkers, located in a picturesque land, full of woods and lakes, called Masuria. A secret complex of multi-storey bunkers, completely hidden from the world, was the witness to the most important moments of the Second World War. Despite being blown up during the retreat of Germans in January 1945, the Wolf’s Liar is still very impressive. The colossal concrete bunkers spread on the huge area show the military impetus and power of the Nazi Germany. Hitler wasn’t the only one to quarter here – many of the most important people of the III Reich, like Goering, Bormann, Keitel and Jodl, had their bunkers in Wolf’s Lair. On our way back we will visit one of the three places: Mamerki, where you can see more bunkers, a medieval castle, or a beautiful, baroque church with spectacular interior. The choice is up to you!
