Sarasota National Cemetery

My wife and I had the honor of visiting this beautiful cemetery while on vacation in Sarasota. Since I am retired from the United States Navy, we always ensure that a portion of our travels involves spending time to reflect on the sacrifices made by our brave men and women serving in the United States Armed Forces. The cemetery was very clean and organized, and it had a really spectacular Pavillion with cement seating and granite signs that surround the back side with historical pictures and descriptions, really fascinating. The people that we encountered during our visit were overall very kind and thankful for the wonderful VA and private partnership that constructed this valuable tribute to our wonderful Veterans. I would highly recommend a visit to this cemetery even if you don't have a previously deceased relative resting here.

Church of the Redeemer Episcopal

Church of the Redeemer is a traditional Anglican church in downtown Sarasota. Founded in 1885, and in current location since 1950, this beautiful church has over 2,500 full-time members plus receives many seasonal visitors. Constructed in traditional cruciform style with an elaborate icon above the high altar, many amazing stained glass windows, historical oil paintings and art, and bell tower with bells made in Passau Germany.

Really Anglo-Catholic rather than purely Episcopalian. (Smells and bells as the occasion arises: YES!!!) Warm and welcoming, HALO system, TRULY OUTSTANDING organist, very good choir, especially when their prime soloists and often equally-talented spouses are "in the house," and an excellent organ. Top-notch "extra" musicians (trumpeters, French hornists, harpists, strings players, drummers/timpanists) are brought in for the big feast days. There are lunchtime concerts during Advent and Lent, and some evening concerts by guest professional musicians as well. The campus includes buildings for children's education and for participatory lectures for adults. Valet parking is available. The congregation is accomplished, appreciative, and compassionate as evidenced by its thrift shop and by Resurrection House, a daytime shelter for the homeless, of which Redeemer was a founding-member church. Come to Redeemer once, and you'll come back again!

Strolling along the streets of Siesta Key Village is lots of fun! We enjoyed the variety of cute shops, the beautiful flowers everywhere and, of course, the incredible assortment of places to eat! It is a very laid back, relaxed and welcoming village. It is also small enough that you can take your time to enjoy it. Of course, it also has the number 1 rated beach in the United States nearby! Siesta Key Village and its beautiful beach are well worth a visit when in the Sarasota area!

This famous sculpture (now it is a copy of the original by Seward Johnson) is the thoughtful reminder of the past, and nowadays it is a great photo opp. It brings back all kinds of memories - from the world's history, from our country's history, and from the history of our own lives. I am writing this Review on the 75th Anniversary of the historic D-Day - and of course, I know what I am thinking about. I am thinking about all the veterans of the World War 2, who heroically fought to bring peace to our planet. Today, this sculpture is for them.
