Ponta Delgada (Portuguese pronunciation: [ˈpõtɐ ˌðɛɫˈɣaðɐ]) is the largest municipality (concelho) and administrative capital of the Autonomous Region of the Azores in Portugal. It is located on São Miguel Island, the largest and most populous in the archipelago. The population in 2011 was 68,809, in an area of 232.99 square kilometres (89.96 square miles). There are 17,629 residents in the three central civil parishes that comprise the historical city: São Pedro, São Sebastião, and São José. Ponta Delgada became the region's administrative capital under the revised constitution of 1976; the judiciary and Catholic see remained in the historical capital of Angra do Heroísmo while the Legislative Assembly of the Azores was established in Horta.

I have forgotten how beautiful the churches are here, if your in town stop by for a quick visit. The Portuguese have such a respect for their religion.

We spent a couple of hours here on a drizzly morning when our cruise ship docked here overnight. What a pleasant surprise! Not a huge museum but it was fun climbing up and down the fort going in and out the exhibition halls. 3E general admission but 1E for seniors. Group rate for 10 or more also 1E each. Personnel was very friendly and accommodating. Would love to go back one day.

In the heart of Ponta Delgada, you can find Portas da Cidade. Its a beautiful square, with a monument and with a lovely sea view.

We visited the portion of the museum in the old convent building, where we viewed a historical timeline of the Azores and Sao Miguel island, preserved structures and art from the convent the museum is housed in, and taxidermy of animal specimens collected on and around the Azores and throughout the world. I thoroughly enjoyed the exhibits, especially the taxidermy specimens from the ocean surrounding the islands. The historical timeline exhibit could use even more information, as I did not know much about the history of the islands going into it, and was eager to learn much much more. The cost was either 2 or 3 euros per person on a Tuesday, and they offer a student price of 1 Euro per person. It costs more if you also want to visit the other museums in the complex, which are located throughout the city.
