Despite its otherworldliness, the carpark for this gem in only a 15 min drive from State Highway 1 and well worth the excursion. At the carpark you'll find an information booth and an honesty box asking for $5 pp. Pay up and march across the farmland to a long steep descent to the river. When you reach the river, you'll see a stand of woodland/ native bush a few hundred metres upstream. This is where the boulders are. There's a table at the edge of the woods and a full set of table and chairs in the heart of the glade if you're planning a picnic. It's a long hard trudge back up the hill (carry water) but what an amazing place!!!

At the Old West Town you step back in time and experience the charm of the Old West. We offer a total Western experience from our western activities and lip smackin cowboy cuisine, to our luxurious premium rooms, elegantly furnished in Victorian style or our Plains Indian/Rustic standard rooms. Visiting us is by arrangement only.
We had such an amazing time! We were very well looked after and the guys working there are lovely! The town itself is beautiful and so authentic, there is also an abundance of wild life in the area, including deer, moreporks, and so much more. The food was wonderful and there were always plenty of snacks. It is such a fantastic place to stay! Thank you to everyone who works there, it was great!

What a Superb location and the views are amazing l am using these because l love stair climbing and from here l am out climbing Wharite Peak so just message me if you ever want to do it. Very steep gets the heart rate up but if you are struggling just slow down and even if you have to wait a few minutes do it, this is a huge moment for a lot of people when you finally get to the top well done to all who do. Even if you do a few steps at a time keep going never give in and one day you may even get to do the other steps further along.

This scenic alternative route to State Highway One, offers you a wide range of activities, from secret swimming holes, walks and hikes through ancient native bush, horse treks as well as gardens and heritage collections galore. You can drive this route in a day easily, but to make the most of the chance to experience real Kiwi backcountry, we recommend that you plan it over at least two days.

A unique experience including the walk down the underground tunnel to get to the elevator. Once at the top the views over Whanganui & the river are great, even better if you climb either one of the towers at the top.
