See a buffalo up close, live like a cowboy for a day on a working cattle ranch or visit a stagecoach stop on the Sante Fe Trail are just a few of the many vacation experiences possible in this state in America’s heartland. You’ll love the wide-open spaces and the opportunities to engage in a variety of one-of-a-kind experiences in this marvelous state, which has the largest segment of true tallgrass prairie remaining in the U.S. Regardless of where you visit: a major metropolitan area like Kansas City, a college town like Manhattan or Lawrence or engaging places like Wichita, Dodge City and Salina, there are a wide array of attractions and sights nearby. If you want to familiarize yourself with cowboy culture, visit the Boot Hills Museum in Dodge City, dine on all-you-can-eat barbeque and hear songs of the American Cowboy at Diamond W Chuckwagon Supper in Wichita or explore the Dickinson County Heritage Center in Abilene, which has dance halls, gaming rooms and 32 saloons.
For outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy hiking, biking, fishing, bird watching and other activities, three of the state’s most popular parks are: Cheney State Park near Wichita; Scott State Park near Scott City and Tuttle Creek State Park near Manhattan.

Veterans Memorial Park is located on one bank of the Arkansas River near the Keeper of the Plains monument. I came across this park while riding bike on the trail next to the river. Being on the bank of the river, the memorial is spread out linearly. But, all the war memorials have a nice connected walking path. I did not find any specific sign that indicated an entrance to the park. This is a nice place to remember all the servicemen who have sacrificed for the nation in the course of so many wars.

Definitely a destination for Rte 66 folks like ourselves. The old clock near the mural was cool too. Galena also offers the restored Kan-O-Tex service station and we saw a Texaco station being refurbished as well. Great to see! Quite a few lunch restaurants 'downtown'. An enjoyable stop for sure. Street parking was plentiful during the week. A few Galena photos below in close proximity to the mural.

Very nice reproduction saloon. Visitors can get a cold sarsaparilla or a cold beer, sit and soak in the ambience. Bartender even plays the piano and tries to play a song from the state visitors are from! From here, the tour continues to all the other buildings and you can see everything the museum has to offer.

This has to be one of the most interesting places I have ever visited. It would have been fun to have known the guy who created this venue. Learning about his beliefs and political views was a hoot!

Massachusetts Street is basically the Downtown in Lawrence. It is a lively and beautiful street teeming with a variety of retail businesses. In fact, there are two brewery restaurants well worth the visit. Just one block west is the wonderful library, a modern architectural design not to be missed. Then there is the South Park, a beautiful community park with a lovely garden. The Kansas River Levee trail is not too far from Massachusetts; it is a nice place to walk and enjoy the expansive views of the river if it is not a hot day. All in all, Massachusetts Street is an enjoyable downtown area for leisurely walk, shopping and food.

My kid really enjoyed seeing Mater when she was younger and we still enjoy eating at the little restaurant that Mater sits beside now. It is fun for people of all ages. I would recommend to others

On October 25, 1864, on the banks of Mine Creek, two Union brigades of approximately 2,500 troops defeated approximately 7,000 Confederates from General Sterling Price's Army of Missouri. Federal Colonels Frederick W. Benteen and John H. Philips led the attack in one of the largest cavalry battles of the Civil War and a major battle fought in Kansas. Their dramatic story comes alive at Mine Creek Civil War Battlefield.
Geocaching brought us here - and we’re glad! Visitor center is top notch, great trails, and a bit of history we didn’t know was here!

The Buffalo Bill Cultural Center is a Kansas community partner Travel Information Center. We have Kansas state maps, brochures, and a great gift shop featuring many Kansas made products. Come in for travel assistance, enjoy a cup of coffee, and stay for a picnic lunch. We are pet friendly outside and inside.
This huge sculpture, atop a (accessible) hill overlooking the surrounding plains is worth the jot off I-70. And, the two sculptors are from a nearby town. We were there on a Sunday so, unfortunately, the visitors center was closed. As much as the history of buffalo hunting is a sad one, this sculpture is amazing, just from the art standpoint.
