Top 10 Points of Interest & Landmarks in Island of Hawaii, Hawaii (HI)

June 15, 2021 Weston Hennigan

Life on the Big Island is a little bit slower… and locals like it that way. The natural beauty and ecological features of the island are a draw for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. Test your chutzpah at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, home to the longest volcanic eruption in recorded history, or climb to the indescribably beautiful summit of Mauna Kea. At the end of the day, there’s nothing more refreshing than a quivering plate of fresh poke, followed by a fruity shave ice.

We visited the Kanaloa Octopus Farm at NELHA, and really enjoyed learning that work is being done to maintain populations of sea creatures, and to research how we can better live in harmony with the fascinating ocean environment.

I never know what this little gem of a market will have in store for me. Oh and an on-site thrift store! Got me a chainsaw and a $1 Patagonia cashmere sweater. Mahalo Cooper Center! <3

Mookini Heiau

Spiritual place thought to be the birthplace of King Kamehameha.

My rental Jeep got me to within a short 15 minute walk to the Heiau, there’s one 3’ deep pond I didn’t want to cross even in the Jeep and the Heiau isn’t much farther on foot so I hiked on in. I was the only person there. A very quiet and sublime place where thousands of Hawaiians were sacrificed. Respect was given. Probably one of the less visited sites but well worth the short trip for the history and the incredible view of Maui and breaching whales offshore. A very picturesque place to visit while noting the horror and yet history of the past

Pepeekeo Scenic Drive

Reviewed By pfefmeister - San Francisco, United States

When headed north from Hilo, make sue you take this 4 mile detour through lush jungle, across ancient one lane bridges, and a trip back in time. Drive slow and soak up old Hawaii. The botanical Gardens were closed when we passed through - probably due to COVID. Still, lush, dripping vegetation was Uber scenic on a rainy day. Well worth it and clearly marked off of Highway 19.

Holei Sea Arch

Reviewed By Escape-overseas - Stevenage, United Kingdom

Located a short walk from the restricted parking area at the foot of the Chain of the Craters Road, across the lava field to the viewing area, where the power of nature is again in full view. The erosion of the lava by the power of wave action crashing onto the shoreline has created a sea arch in the lava outcrop. A definite photo opportunity.
