Fremantle Prison is one of Western Australia’s premier tourist attractions and the only World Heritage listed building in the State. The Prison was built by convicts in the 1850s and was used as a place of incarceration for almost 140 years. With solitary cells and gallows Fremantle Prison is a monument to a system of punishment that is uncomfortably recent. Fremantle Prison now holds the key to history, mystery and fun. Step inside and do time with experienced guides on a fascinating Prison Day Tour. Explore the labyrinth of tunnels 20m beneath the Prison by foot and by boat on a Tunnels Tour adventure. Feeling brave? Delve into the darker side of the Prison’s history on an eerie Torchlight Tour.
We had Chris for our True Crime Tour and Janine for our Torch Light tour which were both really good and worth doing. The True Crime tour talks about crimes committed but does not go in to too much detail and therefore is not gross. If you want to hear more about the Claremont case I can recommend the Crime Junkie pod cast which has an episode on the case... This does however go in to a fair amount of detail and would not be recommended for under 16s. The Torch Light tour is good and a very different experience again. A little scary at times but great fun and interesting history on the place.

A visit to this site has always been overlooked during our visits to Fremantle, but on this occasion the visit took precedence. The area is an eleven acre public reserve with manicured lawns and rose beds, all so well maintained that the visitor can sense a great pride in the monument and its surrounds. It dates to 1928 and consists of a large central obelisk surrounded by smaller memorials commemorating the Merchant Mariners, Netherlands Ex-Servicemen's Association, RAN Corvettes, the RAN in Vietnam, Royal Marines, Royal Navy and US submariners memorial. Tributes both to the bravery of men and women and the cost of conflict. Lest We Forget.

St Patrick’s Basilica is a church with a long history - a listed building in Fremantle. The first Catholic mission opened in Fremantle in 1850 served by the Benedictine Order, with services held in the Court House. The original church was built in 1860. The current limestone building was opened in June 1900. It was not until 1994 that it was raised to the status of a minor basilica. The stonework is late 14th century Gothic in style. Walls are constructed of Cottesloe and North Fremantle stone. The wood is jarrah, kauri and oregon timber. The tapestry above the high altar is the first thing to catch the visitors eye. Made of Australian wool it was constructed in Galway Ireland. It weights a tonne and was first hung in 1994 - with a surface area of 50 square meters. Depicting spiritual matters in the spiral, dove and Celtic Cross. The peripheral elements of the tapestry depicts air, water, fire and earth ( for, from earth you came, and so to earth you will return). There is a free brochure available at the church entrance with the history. A beautiful church with lots of interesting stained glass windows and statues. Part of the great Catholic heritage of Australia - a church where immigrants thanked God for their long sea voyage to Australia. Well worth a visit. Photogenic, and if you want to photograph the front of the church a wide angle lens is helpful.

The Fremantle Round House is the oldest public building in Western Australia, purpose built as a gaol (jail) when the Swan River Colony was first settled. Volunteer Guides are available to share the history of the Round House with visitors and the Round House is open from 10.30am to 3.30pm daily (except for Christmas Day and Good Friday). The cannon is fired (weather permitting) at 1.00pm every day on the Gun Deck and we welcome visitors applying to be the Honorary Gunner for the day.
run by volunteers on the day I visited, interesting history worth coming in to listen and look around, the round house was a prison and lookout, more interesting history to check out
