Best known as the birthplace of St. Francis, Italy's patron saint, Assisi lies amid Umbria's rolling hills. Religious pilgrims have come here for centuries to visit the Basilica of San Francesco (where St. Francis is buried) and the Basilica of Santa Chiara (to see the tomb of St. Clare). Visit the Eremo delle Carceri to see caves where medieval hermits withdrew from the world. (You may find such solitude quite appealing—especially if you're here on a daytrip from Rome!)

The retreat high in the mountains above Assisi where St. Francis frequently stayed to meditate and pray.
Quiet, forested retreat. Wander about, watch for short doorways (!), sit, breathe Views are wondrous.

This lively and well-preserved square is the heart of Assisi's social, cultural and political life.
Right across from the church of Maria sopra Minerva there is an excellent stationary store with great selection of note cards and local maps. It is in the shop with the tile sign advertising the local bicycle touring club

A great place for a stroll, this scenic street in the heart of Assisi is lined with beautiful residences, shops and interesting buildings from centuries past.
Assisi is my favorite place in the world. You can sense the gentle spirit of St. Francis everywhere. I recommend having an experienced guide show you around the Basilica to explain the various frescos. Make sure you go to the lower basilica where St. Francis is buried. We had the opportunity to celebrate mass in the monk's chapel - not the same as the lower basilica. If you are traveling with a priest, you can request to have a private mass and they will assign you a location.

Most people visit Assisi so as to venerate the remains of St. Francis, who is entombed in the Basilica bearing his name. As you walk up hill - Assisi sits on top of a hill - you finally come to this magnificent plaza in front and to the side of the Basilica, at its lowest level. (I recommend you start your visit to the Basilica at this level and not the highest.) You are rewarded by the best view of the entire church and if you look left as you approach the entrance, you will have magnificent views of the valleys below.

In the center of historic Assisi, this street leads to the Basilica of St. Francis.
A lovely esplanade offering a beautiful angle to view the Basilica di San Francesco. Love the paving and the cleanliness is immaculate!

A wonderful place, very unusual and full of stories and the past. My friend was able to tell me a lot about it and I am completely enchanted. Time and again I discover fantastic places in Assisi. I'm still totally excited. It's true, I've met my fate!
