The world's largest coral reef system, the Great Barrier Reef stretches almost 1500 miles into the Pacific from the tip of Queensland. Designated a Marine Park by the Australian government and a World Heritage Area by UNESCO, the reef is home to an extraordinary abundance of species and habitats. Snorkeling, diving and fishing are rightly popular along the reef, nowhere more so than on the Whitsunday Islands, where the silica sands and aqua waters of the Coral Sea create the perfect beach escape.

I was staying on Flinders St within walking distance of Anzac Park and came across the bright lights at the fountain as I was coming down Wickham St. The fountain is the centrepiece of the park. It was a magical place and I spent a while mesmerised by the light show. The colours change from red to blue to green, even rainbow. There is also a gazebo inside the park and I met a friendly possum there who seemed fine with humans. Well worth a stop off after dark.

Muddy's playground is open every day of the year between 9am and 7pm (including public holidays and weekends). Sections of Muddy's are closed for maintenance on Tuesday and Thursday mornings until noon. Even when maintenance works are being carried out, Council aims to have at least half the playground available for use. Muddy's is a modern, fun, safe, splash playground and parkland. It incorporates active, passive, interactive and educational facilities with a combination of play equipment. Muddy's playground is themed "Life in Trinity Bay" and the playground includes water play areas plus a flying fox, sound chimes, track ride, rope bridge, slides, play houses, story telling areas, see-saw, trick track and puzzle games. Please note that the disabled-use Liberty Swing uses the MLAK national keying system. For access please ask at Muddy's cafe. Muddy's has two toilet facilities one at the north end of Muddy's near the cafe and one at the southern end of Muddy's. Muddy's has barbecues, picnic tables and an on-site cafe.

This water park is located on the waterfront of the town. It is a great spot for the kids to safely play and get very wet, which is what it is all about.

The Figtree Playground is right downtown Cairns. An entire play area has been built in and around this giant tree with many aerial roots (see my picture and others). This is a delightful playground that is perfect for children ages 4-14. Visiting the playground could be a good filler between other activities, or a place to spend some energy when the children need to run. The playground is surrounded by lawn on one side, and a pier with coffee shops and such on the other side. There are no tickets, no staff, no reservations. Just show up and have fun.

Kershaw Gardens has been described as Rockhampton’s big back yard for all people to enjoy. These magnificent gardens stretch one kilometre parallel to the Bruce Highway and provide an attractive, peaceful setting within North Rockhampton. Enjoy the spacious parklands with walking tracks, play areas for the kids and spectacular photo opportunities including a magnificent waterfall. This is THE PLACE to stop if you have children! Since 1988, the Gardens has undertaken a number of significant changes, but none more so than the redevelopment of the Central section which was finalised in the winter 2018. Built for families, parties, small events and outdoor activities the central section of the Kershaw Gardens is a must do. Don't miss: Wyatt's Wonder Web: Originally designed for New York’s Central Park, Wyatt’s Wonder Web includes five levels of play for kids and adults too. Standing at nine metres high, climb through various obstacles including climbing ropes, ladders and tunnels.
It is really amazing what can be achieved even on a relatively small patch of land in the middle of a busy city environment. The Kershaw Gardens are remarkable. They are exceptionally popular with locals and visitors alike. These gardens have something for everyone - modern, safe and exciting playgrounds for kids, walking tracks and even a Very picturesque waterfall. The waterfall is totally beautiful - with water cascading from the rocks into a lovely pond surrounded by lush tropical plants with various palms reflected in the pond's waters - a perfect postcard or wall calendar image. A must visit when in Rockhampton. Many thanks to everyone who created this lovely park and maintains it.
