Enjoy the best of Osaka's famous street food and hidden back alleys on this 3-hour Osaka Food Tour in the famous foodie neighborhood of Dotonbori & Namba! Experience an unforgettable stroll through the historical food streets of Osaka and eat like a local in the city known as “Japan’s Kitchen.” Your local expert will take you on an unforgettable eating excursion through the busy streets and the hidden, less frequented parts of South Osaka. The tour kicks off in the busy Dōtonbori area where we will learn about Glico man, a Filipino sprinter named Fortunato Catalon who inspired a nation and a company! Similar to Shibuya (its counterpart in Tokyo) the sights and sounds of Dōtonbori often lead you astray to overly-commercialised restaurants with queues of tourists outside. We want to take our guests to places they would certainly miss without local guidance. We will take secret alleys not long after we begin the tour toward the shrine hidden from sight for the average passerby.

The Shinsekai district is unique. Join us on a foodie adventure and travel back in time to this local entertainment district for a taste of vintage Osaka! Though people visit from across Japan and around the world, this area is still very much a local spot with many shops, restaurants and gaming parlors catering to the everyday laborers who live nearby. Take a stroll with our local expert and discover hidden gems and learn more about the colorful past history of Shinsekai through the years. You will get the chance to try different seasonal and local dishes at 5 different stops. Each item has a long history in the Osaka area. Shinsekai evokes the SHOWA era in Japan which was full of optimism, growth and a communal sense of building a better future together. What’s the Story? As the sun sets, the night breaths life into the Osaka metropolis. After dusk the city is bathed in a colorful blend of incandescent and tungsten light. Capture the dreamscape of people, traffic, and city lights in your camera. We’ll freeze the hordes of people against a backdrop of bustling traffic—light smeared in vivid rainbow of iridescent hues. What We’ll Shoot Equipped with our tripods we will decipher the camera’s manual settings and capture long exposures in the city. We will use the traffic’s constant motion to create breathtaking compositions of light trails. At times, we switch to handheld photography and work on low light street photography to capture the mood of Osaka at night. Where We’ll Explore We begin in the bustling heart of the city at Osaka station. After exploring its labyrinthine walkways and passages, we will go out into the Umeda district—the nightlife capital of the city. We will end our exploration in the Kitashinchi entertainment district, known for its glitzy bars and extravagant neon signage.

I was in Kyoto for 3 days and one of the afternoon was dedicated to a photoshoot with a Maiko (an apprentice training to be a Geisha). I had a good session as the Maiko was accommodating and just before the actual session Lukasz showed me some possible photo ideas. This was especially good because my time with the Maiko was limited. After looking at the photos I’ve taken, I wished the lighting was better. There are some unflattering shadows on her face despite her being only 18 years old. Overall the session was good.

Osaka's Kizu Wholesale Market goes back over 300 years, originating in 1710! The tasting tour allows you to experience the freshest foods that can only be found at market, including seasonal fish and vegetables. Osaka's only market walking tour.

A very interesting morning stroll through the fish market - the variety of the fare for sale (seafood but also seaweed and vegetables) is astounding. As most things in Japan, the place is immaculately clean and well-organized. However, unlike other fish markets in Tokyo, Osaka etc this is not a tourist destination - one is spared the embarrassment as one of the gawking hordes. I did feel self-conscious as I snapped a few photos among the hard-working people, just as I felt sorry for the live fish (see attached puffer photo), turtles and other water creatures for sale. The animal cruelty strictures have not yet migrated to Asia, even to ostensibly civilized countries such as Japan where one regularly sees live de-shelled turtles as they move in their packages for sale in supermarkets.

I had an excellent time during my brief stay in Osaka. My tour guide, Kohei, was very friendly and accommodating. Coincidentally, the other members of the tour group were also Bay Area, California natives making the experience more intimate and enjoyable. We all enjoyed the best cuisine Osaka had to offer as well as the sights and sounds of Namba nightlife. I highly recommend it if you’re in town for a short time and open to adventurous dining.
