Virginia can make American history come alive. Visit Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello, tour Civil War battlefields, explore the living history museum at Williamsburg… the possibilities are endless (if the kids object, break up the historical sightseeing with a visit to Busch Gardens). Arlington, site of Arlington National Cemetery, is just across the Potomac River from all the major sites in D.C. In addition to beaches and historical attractions, Virginia has plenty to offer outdoor enthusiasts. Active families will love the Blue Ridge Highlands, where hiking, canoeing and tubing are just a few of the activities offered. Couples might enjoy a romantic mountain cabin in Virginia after a day of hiking in Shenandoah National Park.

My friends and I enjoyed singing, clapping and clogging at Carter Fold with other enthusiastic fans of gospel, country and bluegrass. There were people of all ages in attendance. The museum is interesting with memorabilia of the Carter family.

The Garth Newel Music Center is a gem. We were on vacation in Bath County looking for something to do and we stumbled on one of their concerts. The music center is on a beautiful farm setting just outside of Hot Springs, VA and the concerts are held in a renovated barn. The quartet was delightful. They have a very nice dinner following the concert. Since we had not been there before, we did not stayed for the dinner. Most people did stay. They had an open cash bar and the chef prepares a very nice menu. If you are in the area, we highly recommend catching an evening out at the Garth Newel Music Center.

The Colonial Theatre has a very special place in the history of our community and in the lives of many of our residents. It has weathered many storms and economic crises, as well as years of neglect at various times throughout its history. The Colonial is one of the few remaining vaudeville theatres of its era in Virginia and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
This was a wonderful showcase for the young people to experiment with theater. The play was well done and the venue is fantastic. We are fortunate to have a facility such as this in our community.

We started coming for the Celtic music, then the bluegrass. Last night we saw the Classic Concert Orchestra play Scott Joplin and 1920’s jazz. The intimate venue for small ensembles ensures a great time. One reviewer said to eat ahead. I say check ahead because there is good barbecue occasionally. We’ll be back.
