Bristlecone Trails

Scenic, 2.8-mile hiking trail at Nevada's Great Basin National Park.

Reviewed By rdrees - San Francisco, United States

Our family of five have been to many national parks, and this hike is one of our very favorites. It has an exhilarating but not too strenuous uphill climb that ends up placing you among the oldest trees in the world. The bristlecone pines are almost spiritual in their shriveled majesty, while imparting a sense of weariness along with hopeful wisdom. Don’t miss out on this relatively short hike if you make it to Great Basin National Park, as it is truly special.

Garnet Hill

Reviewed By 939glendar

This place was a lot of fun! I wish there was more information on how to find the garnets at the site, and the sign that had information wasn't at the top of the parking lot so I was looking around for it a few minutes before finding it. Based on some of the other reviews I had read I ran into the grocery store in town and bought three mini colanders/strainers for us to bring with us. We didn't have a hammer and chisel so we were looking for loose garnets. The most successful method for us was to go into the washes and scoop us the loose rocks and sand. Sift out as much of the sand as you can, pick out the big rocks, then slowly pick through the rest to see if you have any garnets. We were only there for an hour or two-this place is close enough to town it is easy to come for just a little bit or you could stay longer if really interested. If you are staying for awhile make sure to bring water. There is a toilet at the top parking lot but we didn't use it so I am not sure the cleanliness of it.

Success Loop

Reviewed By richardlewis115 - Corona, United States

We drove a few miles on the Success Loop with our Subaru Crosstrek AWD vehicle. We really needed a map on this so I would encourage you to get the BLM map before you go try this run. There was some fine white dust on the road that I'm still trying to clean from my car. Be sure to turn off to the right to check out Cave Lake just before the paving ends.

I've played here in every season and the course has always been in good shape. Not an easy course (thanks Arnold!) but I always enjoy it. After your round, the restaurant and bar are quite nice, too.
