Some of the finest red spruce forests for sightseeing and outdoor activities.
I can remember way back in the 1950's when you could look out over the landscape and see forever. Now, pollution prevents such a sight but it is still awe inspiring. To get there you need to ride the Cass Scenic RR and that alone is worth the trip.

Tucked away in a narrow gorge just off the Highland Scenic Highway is a hidden treasure known as the Falls of Hills Creek Scenic Area. This popular 114 acre area contains three waterfalls - 25 feet, 45 feet, and 63 feet. The lower falls, at 63 feet is the second highest waterfall in West Virginia. A three quarter mile trail leads visitors to spectacular views of the three waterfalls as Hills Creek descends 220 feet between the upper and lower falls. The first 1700 feet of trail is a paved, wheelchair accessible path to the upper falls viewing platform. The remainder of the trail is more strenuous with stairways and boardwalks leading to the lower falls. There are 382 stair steps to the lower falls. The complete trip takes about an hour, or longer, if you want to rest often or just enjoy the scenic beauty.
The upper falls can’t really be seen. They need to cut the trees for a better view. Middle Falls was the prettiest in my opinion. Water level was low in all the falls, but the way they were positioned made them look fuller. The lower falls were a good distance from the middle falls and about 6 more flights of steps down. We stood about 3 flights from the bottom and took pics. They were pretty, despite low water. The trail is in good condition. The walkway and steps are good. I read somewhere there were 382 stairs. That’s pretty accurate. It was a beautiful hike, but it’s rough on the average Joe.

The Highland Scenic Highway is a beautiful corridor through Monongahela National Forest. This designated National Scenic Byway extends 43 miles from Richwood to US Route 219, north of Marlinton, WV. It has four developed scenic overlooks. Each site provides a comfortable rest stop, with a beautiful view of the surrounding mountains and valleys. The Highway traverses the mountainous terrain of the Allegheny Highlands and Plateau, and rises from Richwood, elevation 2,325 feet, to over 4,500 feet along the Parkway. The Highway is a paved two-lane road, designated as State Routes 39 and 150. Rt. 150 is a 23-mile Parkway section that is not maintained in the winter. Travel is discouraged on Rt. 150 between November and March, sometimes April.
This road is awesome for Motorcycling if you can keep your eyes on the road. The several overlooks are magnets for picture taking and leaf watching. Definitely worth the trip.

My 16 years old son and I walked the trail around the lake. It’s scenic and I stopped several times to take in the beauty. It’s about 1.5 mile. I’d recommend to wear good hiking shoes.

This .25 mile accessible trail offers close-up views of world class hematite deposits. The honeycomb rocks were slowly shaped and folded during the mountain building that occurred thousands of years ago. This easy and relatively flat trail is a great place to get out of the car with the whole family to learn about these unique rock formations.

This was a fantastic experience for our family of six (4 kids, ranging in age from 5-13) on our recent Thanksgiving trip to West Virginia. For years, I've tried to schedule horseback rides at resorts but always gave up because there weren't enough horses, they wouldn't allow kids that young to ride, or it was too expensive. I was SO impressed by the folks at Cheat Mountain Stables. We scheduled the ride the day before. The price was shockingly affordable, the ride was 1 hour+, and it was through the forest and in different terrains, which was exciting for everyone. Our guide, Skip, was hilarious and walked alongside my youngest, who had his own small horse (which was both thrilling and scary for him). I was so pleasantly surprised that they let him ride alone! The kids had SUCH a sense of accomplishment after this. Skip made sure to stop and take pictures of everyone too - they think of everything. The entire family agreed that the horseback ride was their favorite part of our trip to Snowshoe. It was such a memorable experience and the kids have been begging to go again (though I can't find a similar experience where we live!) Do not hesitate to add this to your time in Snowshoe.

Located atop Cheat Mountain, this resort village features many resort amenities including hotels and a plaza filled with shops and restaurants.
Great east coast ski option during Covid when so many places don't have capacity or don't allow out of staters. Large enough resort with plenty of trails for all skill levels & good terrain park options. Village is well marked so easy to find everything. Mostly takeout options for dining so plan ahead and bring food. We stayed slopeside at Expedition Station and although the condo was small cannot beat how easy ski-in/ski-out was during the stay. Split rock pools had controlled capacity however what a fun place to take dip outside in the snow!
