KwaZulu-Natal (/kwɑːˌzuːluː nəˈtɑːl/; also referred to as KZN and known as "the garden province") is a province of South Africa that was created in 1994 when the Zulu bantustan of KwaZulu ("Place of the Zulu" in Zulu) and Natal Province were merged. It is located in the southeast of the country, enjoying a long shoreline beside the Indian Ocean and sharing borders with three other provinces and the countries of Mozambique, Swaziland and Lesotho. Its capital is Pietermaritzburg and its largest city is Durban. It is the 2nd most populous province in South Africa, with slightly fewer residents than Gauteng.

Cumberland Nature Reserve is a Nature Lovers Paradise. Over 300 bird species, 30 + mammal species and over 300 species of wild flower call Cumberland their home. Well maintained hiking trails traverse the entire Reserve allowing one to explore all the different habitats and make the most of the jaw-dropping scenery. The Reserve offers the ultimate escape into Nature through overnight stays in a variety of secluded self-catering accommodation as well as two private campsites.
Cumberland Nature Reserve is a hidden gem. It is my 'Go To' place when I need Bush Away Time .... time to replenish my soul and to breathe. Over the past years I have paid many visits to this little spot of paradise often taking photos of all things nature and other times, just sitting at a perfectly kept picnic spot enjoying all nature has to offer. All picnic spots are well kept and the ablutions are spotlessly clean. Horseshoe Cottage was a perfect spot for a birthday weekend and from there we explored many tracks, trails and rocks looking for snakes, scorpions, butterflies and a host of other insects and things! The birdlife at Cumberland is amazing. Naturally the animals are a drawcard too and it is always great seeing their excellent condition. Aloe season is a delight and not to be missed! Cumberland deserves to be explored! One of my most favourite hideaways.

We were distressed to see the Southbroom beach washed away after heavy rains but were delighted to see that it’s back to its pristine best. There can’t be a more beautiful family friendly beach on the entire Kwa Zulu Natal coast. What a lovely atmosphere! One can chose to spread one’s towels on the gently sloping lawn or opposite the lagoon. This blue flag beach has excellent safety standards and the lifeguards are very pro active. The surfing is top notch and surfers and body- boarders can easily dive off the rocks to catch their next big waves instead of battling through the surf. There is also a safe tidal pool for the little ones. The Riptide Restsurant is right on the beach and offers excellent teas and light lunches and even early dinners in season.

A stunning drive. Luckely the weather was good all the way. Went up the Saturday, stayed over, and drove down the next. Currently there are roadworks leading from the bottom up to the SA border post. But thereafter still just plain gravel road. Initially the road starts off fair, with a couple of rough patches. But leading towards the steps, and the steps themselves are 4x4 low. Do not think someone with no 4x4 experiance should drive it. Coming downs, steep decents with heavy switchbacks. Be on the lookout for other vehicles. Sometimes find a sport to pull over to let someone pass. Take it slow. Definatelly worth the trip.

Dragon Rock Reptile Centre is situated in the heart of the beautiful Drakensberg in Kwazulu Natal. We are a nature and reptile centre. We believe education is the most powerful weapon with which we can change the world around us. That is why we strive to educate people about the animals we have and animals in general. Combining the nature centre with our reptile centre we aim to send people home more aware of their environment.
Awesome experience with a truly knowledgeable guide. It's both entertaining and educational. We loved getting up close and personal with the animals and being a part of the experience in such a beautiful place. Highly recommended.
