Top 10 Outdoor Activities in El Paso, Texas (TX)

October 20, 2021 Leida Jutras

For an alternative Texas experience, consider El Paso. Located far from the bright lights of Dallas or San Antonio, in the state's western corner along the sparkling shores of the Rio Grande, El Paso boasts a different feel than its eastern counterparts. A true melting pot of American and Mexican culture, the combination is noticeable everywhere. Visit the El Paso Museum of Art and see American works from the 19th and 20th centuries, as well as Mexican colonial art and retablos from the 1700s and 1800s. Restaurants serve authentic Mexican cuisine, Texas barbecue or a little of both. While this fusion of cultures draws some, the rock climbers who descend on El Paso have only one thing in mind: scaling the massive boulders of Hueco Tanks State Park. Those who prefer the ground can wander through the park's interpretive center and see ancient Indian pictographs. Other popular El Paso pastimes include golf, mountain biking and our personal favorite, stargazing.

Crazy Cat Cyclery Rentals

This excellent 5-Star shop has World HQ on Stanton Street, up a steep escarpment from downtown, and quite some distance away from my Eastside home. So, obviously, my first & favorite-most shop is at 6625 Montana/US62-180, close to El Paso NATIONAL Airport. All the personnel in Crazy Cat Cyclery-Airport are extremely professional, helpful & ready to keep us bicyclists pedaling. I have over 40 years/100,000miles/160,000kms cycling experience (both commuting & touring)and there is no way that is possible without a quality shop like Crazy Cat-Airport. I currently pedal a Doublevision (18+ years!) which I do a lot of the maintenance EXCEPT on my Magura hydraulics. Fortunately, Crazy Cat-Airport has all the right tools, knowledge & skill set to fix them—and much of my own maintenance work, too! They certainly have my “Wheel of Approval!”

Butterfield Trail Golf Club

The history of the old west merges with plans for the future of El Paso at the beautiful Butterfield Trail Golf Club. Owned by El Paso International Airport and designed by famed golf course architect Tom Fazio, Butterfield Trail has received numerous accolades including being named the #3 municipal course in America by Golfweek magazine 2009-2015. Butterfield Trail Golf Club was established in the summer of 2007 by city leaders who were determined to create more than an award-winning, world-class golf course. Their ambition was to make the course into a special place for the El Paso community, open to all for life’s special moments and occasions. Located only a long iron shot from the El Paso International Airport, near a programmed 150-acre industrial park and several partner hotels, Butterfield Trail offers an exciting golf adventure in a convenient setting not too far off the beaten path.

An amazing hike/climb but not for the faint of heart. You can walk the trails easily enough if you are used to the altitude but when you begin to climb to the top, make sure you are in good shape. Breathtaking views of the city.

Had a great time - guided tour was well worth it. Looking forward to self guided (gps) tours when they get it worked out. I took the 2 1/2 hour trip. Hopefully they’ll add longer trips in the future (they used to have an all day adventure.... maybe add 1/2 day event intermittently...?) The parking lot is small but wasn’t an issue. The RZR’s were in good condition, the helmets and goggles were old/ dirty - if you’re a germophobe, bring your own (think bowling alley shoe rental). The $15 insurance waiver was a bit of a surprise - the fee covers everything AFTER $1500 in damage, meaning that you eat any expense up to $1500. For me, this was not a deal breaker, I thought the $15 fee was similar to a rental car (rent a car, buy the insurance and everything is covered... in this case, caveats applied, but it was still worth it). The only other surprise, for me, was that we couldn’t swap drivers mid-trip. I was hoping that my friends could get some time behind the wheel, especially when we hit the dunes. All things considered, this was a blast and I highly recommend it.

This spot offers an excellent view of the two cities and two countries. It was very crowded and parking is extremely limited, but if you want one of the best night views of these cities, this is the place to go.
